Departmental Overview

The Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development (LEAD) Center is a department at the center of student life at UC Berkeley and is the campus department responsible for facilitating leadership development opportunities in addition to encouraging student involvement and engagement within the campus community. This department is clustered with other student engagement offices within the Dean of Student portfolio that resides within Student Affairs.

As a team of dedicated and committed student affairs professionals, the LEAD Center promotes a student-centered learning environment by advising and empowering students to pursue their co-curricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. The LEAD Center provides services and resources focused on furthering students' leadership abilities and personal and professional developmenthence positively impacting the holistic learning and development of all UC Berkeley students. More specifically, the LEAD Center provides advising and leadership development opportunities to student groups, including 1,000 registered student organizations (RSOs), 65+ recognized fraternities and sororities, student government, and an array of campus-wide student leadership initiatives and programs.

Responsibilities

OVERVIEW:

As part of the LEAD Center team, this critical supervisory position involves planning, developing and implementing programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at UC Berkeley. More specifically, the Director for Student Government Advising has primary responsibility for collaborating in the creation, implementation, and assessment of leadership development opportunities, and advising support and financial services for the d Students of the University of California (ASUC), the Graduate Assembly (GA), and their perspective members, senators, and various project/committee directors, chairs, student staff and volunteers.

In addition, the incumbent also has oversight for the planning and implementation of pre-existing and new campus-wide programming and activities; including late night new student orientation activities and events, cultural and educational awareness programs, and other social programs and initiatives that assist the student government in their effort to connect all students to the greater UC Berkeley community. Furthermore, the director has the responsibility of researching, implementing, and collaboratively coordinating campus-wide leadership initiatives that encompass the use of cutting- edge leadership and student development literature, theory and best practices. The director also assists in the facilitation of leadership trainings and/or workshops offered through various LEAD Center leadership initiatives and programs.

STUDENT GROUP ADVISING, TRAINING, AND SERVICES:
  • Utilize student development and leadership practices and theories to design and implement advising services for students involved with the ASUC, GA, the campus programming board, and leadership programs.
  • Advise students on the planning and execution of ASUC and GA events and programs and services by maintaining consistent advising practices (one on one meetings with key student leaders, actively participating in student committee meetings, etc.)
  • Supports and guides the negotiation process and drafting of contracts for various campus performers and other outside vendors for all student organizations, including student groups recognized by the ASUC.
  • Serve as the LEAD Center liaison/advisor to ASUC and GA executive branches and attend and participate in weekly ASUC and GA executive meetings (evenings).
  • Oversee the development and execution of training programs for all students involved in the student government, as well as other campus activities and leadership programs that involve campus partners and other content specific guests to help students learn and develop as student government leaders.
  • Establish leadership and student development competencies and outcomes to regularly assess impact of programs and services and make necessary modifications.
  • Develop and oversee existing leadership, advising, and support programs and initiate new programs for the ASUC, GA and their various affiliates that meet student group needs and priorities.
  • Develop and maintain collaborations with campus and community stakeholders to design advising services that meet the needs of all student communities.
  • Develop and manage programs of providing counseling, guidance and development to student organizations' leaders, represent the organizations to UC, the local community and other relevant audiences.


POLICY ARTICULATION:
  • Articulate and provide interpretation of laws, institutional polices, and procedures to staff and affiliates of the student government and other programs.
  • Provide information and guidance on campus regulations and use of campus facilities to students, and campus community members.
  • Collaborate on the design and implementation of LEAD Center policies and procedures that may impact the ASUC and GA (such as registration of signatories and financial agents).
  • Researches best practices and professional standards pertaining to executing student government advising and support programs, campus programming and leadership programs at peer and aspirational institutions.
  • Develop strategic and creative methods to incorporate student input in feedback in designing new student government policies. Communicate campus policies to off- campus stakeholders and partners.
  • Regarding design and modification of program, develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations (schools, districts, management) critical to program success.


SUPERVISION:
  • Directly supervise and handle all supervisory functions for a team of student government advising coordinators (ASUC and Graduate Assembly).
  • Collaborate in providing a well-trained student government support, advising, and leadership program staff that focuses on providing excellent service and developmental programs.
  • Conduct and submit staff performance evaluations for designated staff
  • Collaborate in training, supervising and evaluating a team of coordinators based on department standards, timelines and procedures.
  • Supervise student staff in conjunction with coordinators.
  • May act in the role as Director of the LEAD Center in the absence of the Assistant Dean & Director.


ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT:
  • Advocate for the current needs of students with campus departments, administration and with community stakeholders
  • Through collaborative efforts with staff and students, recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures that affect the ASUC and GA.


FISCAL MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION:
  • Manage operational and personnel expenses within an established budget during the fiscal year for the student government advising unit of the LEAD Center.
  • Advise and support the ASUC Finance Committee in decision making and review of funding and space allocation requests.
  • Steward and manage check (money) dispersement for student organizations through various financial systems including Engage (Callink).
  • Ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively; administrative tasks are handled appropriately; and if necessary, monthly/annual reports are compiled and submitted according to due dates.
  • Assist staff in developing program budgets and budget requests including responsibilities, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee the articulation and management of financial processes and support services to the ASUC, GA and their perspective affiliates.
  • Directly and closely work with the ASUC Student Union Finance Office in overseeing the management of student government financials as well as meet deadlines set by fiscal policies on reporting and management of funds.


Required Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of student affairs/higher education experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of college student advising and counseling techniques, and equivalent experience around training and working with complex student organizations.
  • Advanced knowledge of common higher-ed specific computer application programs and knowledge of higher-ed and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Advanced abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Advanced ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Highly skilled in resolving emotionally intense, high-conflict situations respectfully and credibly among various campus constituents.
  • Works well in a collaborative environment that includes potential for constructive negotiation skills and active listening.
  • Strong communication skills. Can demonstrate ability to communicate effectively one-to-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts and has a willingness to facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation and teamwork within student leaders as well as peer career staff.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel or related field required and/or equivalent years experience/training.
  • Previous work experience with student government.
