Overview

The Tufts Latinx Center was founded in October 1993 as a space and resource for Tufts University students and community members to gather, learn, share experiences, support and appreciate Latinx identities. As one of the centers within the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Latinx Center seeks to contribute to Latinx/Hispanic/Caribbean/Latin American students’ success at Tufts University by providing resources, guidance and programming for academic achievement, identity development, belonging, and leadership in collaboration with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the greater community.

The Latinx Center is a welcoming environment dedicated to celebrating and furthering the Latinx community. Through collaboration, dialogue and research, the LC seeks to inspire advocacy, appreciation, and social change by centering the margins within our community. The center offers advising, mentorship, programming and guidance for all students within the Latin Diaspora.

In collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and alumni, the Latinx Center coordinates year-round programs and offers resources for the transition to college, provides social opportunities to learn from and engage with peers, and informs students of campus events and opportunities. The Latinx Center is part of the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion (DSDI) which aims to center diversity, inclusion, and equity issues on campus to support all students with a focus on those from historically marginalized communities.

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Inclusive Excellence, the Director of the Latinx Center serves as a campus resource and educates the community on issues impacting the Latinx community. The Director provides support for undergraduate and graduate students primarily enrolled in the schools of Arts and Sciences, and Engineering. The Director will:

  • Manage and oversee the Latinx Center in all aspects.
  • Take the lead on strategic planning, administration, and leadership of the Center, including establishing its mission and vision.
  • In partnership with the Associate Director, Program Administrator, and student leaders, the Director creates and maintains an atmosphere within the Center that serves as an intentional space in which students engage in ongoing dialogue around issues pertaining to the Latinx community.
  • Work closely with students and student organizations to build leadership skills, plan events, develop relevant programming and initiatives, and address and respond to student concerns and crises.

As a member of the Division for Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Latinx Center Director collaborates frequently with the staff of the other seven identity-based centers in the division (Africana, Asian American, Center for STEM Diversity, FIRST, Indigenous, LGBT, and Women’s), in addition to other departments (Office for Campus Life, University Chaplaincy, Counseling and Mental Health Services, etc.). The Director will serve on a variety of school- and University-wide committees and working groups and will take on special projects and other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Inclusive Excellence.
