Overview

Located five miles from downtown Boston, Tufts University is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the highly-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Tufts students participate in 30 varsity sports, 32 club sports and a number of intramural sports. Tufts Athletics has won eleven NCAA team championships since 2010 and has finished in the top 10 of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in each of the last eight years, including winning the Director's Cup in 2022 as the top Division III Athletic Department in the nation. Tufts Athletics oversees the Physical Education Department and manages all athletics facilities, including the Steve Tisch Sports & Fitness Center. What You'll Do

The Director of Track & Field/Cross Country will oversee and manage all facets of the men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field programs, providing leadership, direction and supervision of the full and part-time coaching staff and the high-level decision-making as it impacts the student-athletes across all six sports and three seasons of competition. The Director will also serve as a primary/head coach in their area(s)/event(s) of expertise.


Essential Functions:

  • Provide leadership by directing the operations and decision-making for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field programs; Supervise full and part-time events coaches across all three seasons, ensuring adherence to all association, conference and university policies and protocol.
  • Oversee and manage the program’s operational budget, fundraising account, meet/practice scheduling, team travel, officials, meet management, indoor/outdoor track facilities and equipment.
  • Identify, evaluate and successfully recruit highly-selective student-athletes within the framework, guidelines and policies of the University, NESCAC and NCAA; Make roster-management decisions, as they relate to University Admissions and overall program success.
  • Educate, coach and provide guidance for highly-competitive student-athletes in selected events/areas of expertise.
  • Engage with alumni and donors for team and program fundraising initiatives and external relations as needed.
  • Complete a secondary duty as assigned by the Director of Athletics


What We're Looking For

Basic Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s Degree; a minimum of five (5) years coaching experience
• Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively coach the sport of track & field and/or cross country, develop and relate to student-athletes in an extremely competitive academic environment
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; gender equity; and the mission of Tufts University
• Knowledge of NCAA and NESCAC rules and a commitment to compliance
• Ability to recruit academically qualified and athletically talented student-athletes
• Dedication to the full academic, athletic and social development of student-athletes
• Extensive knowledge of the sport and a sophisticated understanding of coaching strategies with a demonstrated ability to enhance student-athlete development
• Ability to communicate effectively and foster positive relations with fellow athletics department staff members, student-athletes and other members of the Tufts community, including faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and local community members
• Valid US driver’s license and ability to travel (night and weekend work is required)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree
• Competitive experience participating at the collegiate level
• Fundraising experience


Pay Range

Minimum $57,900.00, Midpoint $72,450.00, Maximum $87,000.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
