Tarleton State University seeks a highly organized, detail and process oriented leader to serve in this critical role within this dynamic, growing institution. The University enrolls over 13,000 students and employs over 870 faculty and 716 staff.

The Associate Provost & Dean of Faculty provides leadership within the academic division for actions related to academic programs, assessment and faculty affairs. The ideal candidate is astute with a meticulous eye for detail and skilled in balancing the many competing priorities of this role within a complex institution. Tarleton State University desires a team-minded leader with stellar written and verbal communication skills who delivers a hands-on approach to leadership, operations and problem solving and will work seamlessly with all levels of the institution including senior administration, faculty, staff and students as well as manage legal affairs alongside legal counsel and the A&M system office.

This position reports directly to the Provost and leads a team consisting of the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development, Dean of Libraries as well as administrative staff positions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Oversees academic programs and their planning, development, external review, and curriculum
  • Serves as liaison to TAMUS BOR and THECB.
  • Submits reports to external entities for program review, low-producing program reports, and responds to internal audits
  • Oversees faculty hiring process including interview, credential verification, and appointment
  • Coordinates processes related to faculty tenure and promotion and post tenure review
  • Supervises activities of the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment and the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development and Dean of Libraries. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Following is an approximate breakdown by area:

30% Faculty Affairs:
  • Supervises activities of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development.
  • Serves as liaison to faculty senate leadership.
  • Oversees and submits faculty communications to BOR and System (P&T, PTR, and awards).
  • Review faculty credential and sets standards for recruitment and retention of faculty.
  • Standardizes faculty processes to align with System rules and policies.
  • Maintains faculty related handbook and SAPs.
  • Oversees faculty awards processes. Oversees process for faculty grievances and appeals.

30% Curriculum, Academic Programs, and Libraries:
  • Supervises activities of Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment.
  • Oversees planning and development of new and modified academic programs.
  • Finalizes proposals for external review [TAMUS BOR, THECB].
  • Assures the integrity of the curriculum process.
  • Serves as liaison to the TAMUS BOR and staff and the THECB related to academic programs.
  • Oversees catalog integrity.
  • Oversees operations of the University Libraries and supervises Dean of Libraries.

30% Assessment, Assessment Services and Academic Planning:
  • Performs/supervises activities related to Academic Program Review, Low-Producing Program Reports and other related reports.
  • Submits reports to external entities such as TAMUS and THECB.
  • Performs tasks related to system, state, and internal audits.
  • Provides leadership for all activities related to learning outcomes assessment, strategic planning, and selecting assessment instruments for the Academic Division.
  • Performs assessment related activities for the Division of Academic Affairs and maintains records of those activities.
  • Oversees planning and implementation of Academic programs delivered to off-campus and extended learning sites.
  • Serves as Institutional 504 Coordinator and supervises Director of Disability and Testing Services.

10% Division Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Serves on Deans' Council, Provost's Council, and Academic Council. Chairs the University Curriculum Committee (or interacts with designated chair).
  • Serves ex-officio on General Education Assessment Advisory Council, University Curriculum Committee, Graduate Council, and others as assigned.
  • Serves as a member of and primary academic liaison to University Planning Council and other committees or task forces as needed.
  • Serves in the Delegation of Authority for the Office of the Provost and provides counsel and advice to the Provost on matters as needed.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university.
  • Held a faculty role and earned the rank of associate or full professor with tenure.
  • Ten years of successful teaching/administrative experience in higher education.
  • Held a variety of administrative roles with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience dealing with legal implications and working closely with a legal support team and human resources.
