Iowa State University, one of the nation’s leading public research universities, seeks a highly motivated, forward-thinking change agent to provide strategic leadership, effective management, and expertise related to institutional research, analysis, data infrastructure, data governance, compliance, and reporting.

 

This is a rare opportunity for an Executive Director of Institutional Research to define, build and lead the office as it transitions to serve the University into the next decades. The ideal candidate will utilize their vision incorporating the latest trends and techniques to redefine the institutional research office into one that closely and collaboratively works with the entire campus community.

 

This position reports to the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost and offers a generous salary and benefits package.

 

The Executive Director will serve as the University’s Chief Institutional Research Officer (CIRO) and as a university-wide leader and advocate for issues related to data analysis, standards, and data governance. With the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning System across the university, the use of data on campus will change in fundamental ways. The new  Executive Director will have a leadership role in building culture among administrators, faculty, and staff in data use and analysis to improve the quality of institutional decision making.

 

The Executive Director manages staff who provide data analysis, interpretation of analysis, and preparation of reports for both internal and external audiences. The new Executive Director will work closely with the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost and other university leaders to develop and implement a vision for the Office of Institutional Research.

 

The university seeks an experienced professional with a commitment to and understanding of the academic mission who will bring:

  • strategic analysis skills and proven leadership abilities to the positions
  • the ability to clearly communicate timely and relevant information and analysis to administrators and other stakeholders to facilitate decision making
  • technical expertise in data-gathering and reporting tools, and analytical capabilities in statistics and survey research
  • the ability to develop a long-term vision for the Office of Institutional Research.
  • strong skills in relationship-building and change management.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience
  • Or a Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience
  • Or a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 5 years of related experience unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Degree in an analytical discipline, such as computer science, educational research, social science research, information systems, or a related field
  • Doctoral degree
  • Progressively responsible experience in institutional research conducting analytical and policy studies in higher education
  • Expertise in analytical/statistical software applications (SPSS, STATA, etc.)
  • Experience with the Workday ERP environment
  • Experience using national-level datasets such as Association of American Universities Data Exchange, IPEDS, Academic Analytics, National Student Clearinghouse
  • Familiarity with accreditation requirements such as the Higher Learning Commission
  • Experience creating predictive dashboards
  • Demonstrated success in presenting data and analyses clearly and accurately in both verbal and written formats
  • Prior supervisory experience
