This is an ideal opportunity for a proven leader to guide, facilitate, and administer major growth in research and scholarly activities among all members of the university community as the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies. This position reports directly to the Provost. 

A leader, educator, and mentor, the successful candidate has interdisciplinary knowledge and thrives in a dynamic environment. Providing leadership and guidance in the vital areas of research and graduate studies, the Vice Provost plays a critical role in the growth and development of the University.

The successful candidate is technically proficient and adept in communicating with all levels across campus, from senior administration to students; is highly organized and able to manage simultaneously a wide variety of activities and priorities in research and graduate studies; and is well-experienced both in grant writing and administration and in teaching within and administration of graduate programs.
 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Responsibilities:

• Fosters research and scholarly activity in the university community.
• Oversees the development of grant proposals and the negotiation of federal and state grants and contracts.
• Oversees the administration of research and sponsored grants through Maestro, research compliance training through CITI, Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Export Controls, and Research Council Committee.
• Participates in planning and budgeting processes within the Office of the Provost.

Graduate Studies Responsibilities:

• Establishes and maintains standards and procedures by which graduate students are admitted, enrolled, supervised, retained, and awarded advanced degrees.
• Establishes and maintains standards and procedures by which graduate assistants are selected and supervised.
• Provides accurate and timely information to potential students, faculty, and administrators concerning the Graduate Studies programs and procedures.
• Chairs the Graduate Council and works with its members to develop appropriate policies.
• Oversees the review and approval of all theses/dissertations/graduate research projects.
• Oversees the approval of awarding all graduate degrees.
• Oversees assessment activities related to graduate education, including conducting regular program reviews, monitoring compliance and accreditation standards, and implementing strategies leading to continuous improvement.
• Works with the staff of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on matters related to graduate education.
• Prepares and requests approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for off- campus upper-division and graduate courses and programs. 
• Takes an active role in the activities of the Association of Texas Graduate Schools, the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools, and the Council of Graduate Schools in the U.S.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Earned doctoral degree from an accredited university.
• Eligible for tenure as a full professor at Texas A&M University–San Antonio.
• Minimum of four (4) years of higher education experience serving in an administrative/management capacity.
• Extensive knowledge and involvement in extramural grant funding or research support, including writing, administration, and oversight.
• Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for grants and research, including compliance in research (IRB, IACUC, FCOI, IBC, etc.).
• Ability to understand and implement policies and procedures regarding fiscal, personnel, and academic matters.
• Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Commitment to working with and supporting a diverse and, in some instances, a nontraditional student population.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

• Familiarity with creating and delivering online graduate programs.
