Position Summary

The Director for Residential Programs is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Office for Residence Life and the residence halls related to residence hall programs. The Director is responsible for oversight of all functions related to residence hall staffing, residence hall staff leadership development and residential educational programming for the University's housing system, encompassing 26 residence halls, 4500+ undergraduates and 110 Resident Assistants. The Director is also responsible for creating and maintaining a residential environment that enhances the quality of student's intellectual, cultural, social, physical and spiritual life and that is conducive to student development and community formation. The Director is responsible for planning for the Fall 2019 opening of six new residence halls housing 1100+ students and an additional 25-30 Resident Assistants.
The Director for Residential Programs is also responsible for working hand-in-hand with Director for Housing and Operations to ensure efficient operation of the Office for Residence Life and the creation of a well-maintained, comfortable, safe, welcoming and educationally purposeful residential community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee, coordinate, and implement all aspects of the Graduate Resident Director, Head Resident, Resident Assistant and Resident Assistant Mentor programs, including selection, training and reappointment processes.
  • Supervise and support Residence Life Professional Staff Members
  • Hire, train, support and directly supervise Assistant Director for Residential Programs, Assistant Director for Student Support, and Area Coordinators for Residence Management (4).
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and provide appropriate feedback.
  • Complete annual performance appraisals. Manage sick and vacation time.
  • Collaborate with Coordinators in implementation of staff recognition and integration efforts for student staff.
  • Oversee programming, staff development, and training budgets.
  • Assist with supervision of Residence Hall Programs Assistant, as needed.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of the Office for Residence Life related to residential programs. Manage and respond to problems, issues and concerns, as needed.
  • Develop and implement crisis response protocols. Work closely with Assistant Director for Student Support and collaborate with other campus resources to assist students experiencing social, emotional or behavioral concerns. Serve as a resource in night and weekend on-call rotation.
  • Oversee strategic planning, implementation and assessment of RA performance, quality of life and programming in the residence halls.
  • Collaborate with appropriate offices in administration of Residential Learning Communities, Campus Ministry Intern Program, and other Residence Hall Programs.
  • Oversee and participate in departmental, divisional and University meetings and committees, as necessary or as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.




Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Student Personnel Services, Higher Education Administration or related field required.
  • Familiarity with the administration and operations of residence halls.
  • 5+ years relevant experience required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and public speaking skills. Ability to give constructive feedback.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs required. Experience with Banner helpful.




Preferred Qualifications



Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

The Residence Life Professional Staff interacts extensively with students and student paraprofessional staff. Consequently, it is common for meetings and events to be scheduled beyond traditional work hours. A member of the Residence Life Professional Staff should anticipate the need to work into evenings and on weekends, as necessary, throughout the academic year, particularly during staff training periods and in conjunction with opening and the closing of the residence halls. Additionally, members of the Residence Life Professional Staff may be asked to work beyond traditional work hours to manage crisis and/or emergency situations.
The Residence Life Office is a high-traffic and busy work environment with multiple peak periods of work activity across the calendar year. Interruptions of work tasks to attend to phone or walk-in inquiries are the norm. Customers, who include resident students and their parents, call frequently with problems, complaints and concerns that must be addressed with courtesy and accuracy.
