    University at Buffalo seeks a dynamic individual to lead UB’s economic development and industry engagement initiatives as the Associate Vice President for Economic Development (AVPED). The AVPED will develop partnerships with industry and government entities to promote economic development in Western New York and beyond. The incumbent will foster innovation and entrepreneurship on campus while promoting UB’s research portfolio to external stakeholders. The AVPED will report directly to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED) and serve on the VPRED senior leadership team.


    Primary Duties and Responsibilities



      • Promote UB’s research and technology to industry.

      • Secure external funding to grow UB’s economic development programs.

      • Collaborate with faculty and industry stakeholders to seed new partnerships and grow research and entrepreneurship at UB.

      • Lead outreach efforts to drive commercialization of UB technologies and ensure UB is represented at various economic development organizations.

      • Work with industry leaders and UB stakeholders to align education and training courses with local workforce needs.

      • Lead and develop a team of approximately 20 staff, including UB’s Technology Transfer Office.

      • Ensure, lead and create programs that support UB’s diversity and inclusion goals in all aspects of economic development.

      • Knowledge of and experience working with economic development organizations and programs.

      • Strong understanding of local ecosystems and how to navigate the organizations who provide various resources to assist innovation and entrepreneurship.

      • Develops and implements long range plans, near term operating practices and policy initiatives to further entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, technology commercialization and technology-based economic development endeavors throughout the region as fostered by the University.

      • Promotes and coordinates UB’s role as a resource for economic development leading community engagement, communications and marketing activities that demonstrate the University’s economic development contributions and attract industry collaboration and funding.

      • Identifies specific gaps in University programs based on industry demands and works with deans and administrators to develop, fund and implement initiatives in response to demand including programs that build research expertise in areas of keen interest to industry.

      • Convenes a standing campus-wide committee responsible for identifying and addressing policy and programmatic issues impacting economic development.

      • Provides leadership to build strategic alliances with industry and state agencies targeted to facilities, research, workforce development and service programs responsive to economic development needs of the university.

      • Collaborates closely with key public officials, non-profit officials and community leaders engaged in economic issues.
