    Departmental Overview

    Center for Support and Intervention within the Office of the Dean of Students, providing substance use recovery support services, violence prevention education, and support for students in distress.

    Overview of Position:

    Working under the Office of the Dean of Students and under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for Student Support and Belonging, the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Center for Support and Intervention oversees the Center for Support and Intervention (CSI) in providing critical services for student wellness. CSI holds the campus's non-clinical case management unit, including specialized staff trained in behavioral intervention, threat assessment, suicide prevention, and crisis management. Through direct work and through chairing the Students of Concern Committee, this position collaborates with the Office of the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), Student Mental Health, the Basic Needs Center, the Center for Student Conduct, UC Police Department (UCPD), the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office (FASO), the PATH to Care Center, the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD), and others as appropriate to address the needs of students who are experiencing acute challenges in areas that may include academics, mental health, basic needs, discipline, family relationships, and potential harm to self or others. This position also directly oversees two other specialized areas that provide student prevention and wellness services: recovery and harm reduction, which provides direct support for students in recovery from substance use and anti-overdose education and resources for the campus, as well as violence prevention, which provides bystander intervention education for students and leads the campus's anti-hazing efforts. The Assistant Dean and Director is also responsible for liaising between senior administrators, various units across campus, and families as appropriate in the event that a student passes away.

    Responsibilities



    • Administers complex functions of a Student Affairs unit, including serving as a campus subject matter expert, chairing committees, triaging and assigning student crisis cases, directing assessment of outcomes, providing oversight for subordinate staff with campus-wide reach and impact, and cultivating relationships with key administrators and other stakeholders across campus.

    • Student crisis management: Provides direct oversight and management of the Students of Concern Committee and serves as the managerial decision maker for the committee. Consults with, partners with, and directs campus partners as appropriate in crises. Communicates with parents/guardians, families, or designated emergency contacts regarding significant emergencies. Occasionally represents Student Affairs in speaking on student crises to other campus constituents.

    • Consultation: Advises senior campus leaders and other administrators on matters concerning high-level student crises including cases involving life safety risk and/or potential media attention.

    • Policy: Oversees policy development for areas served by the Center, such as the campus's handling of student crises, the scope of the Collegiate Recovery Program, the development of anti-overdose programs, and the maintenance of the campus's student death protocol.

    • Provides direction to subordinate supervisors who supervise career staff, contract staff, fellows and interns, and student staff.

    • Creates, promotes, distributes, and maintains educational materials and trainings pertaining to supporting students in crisis.

    • Database management: Hold overall responsibility for the Center's student records database, including making decisions about the maintenance of student records, software contracts, adherence to UC system policy, access rights, and overall performance of case management staff utilizing the system.

    • Responsible for developing and maintaining budgets for managed functions including case management, harm and violence prevention, and Collegiate Recovery and harm reduction.

    • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.


    Required Qualifications



    • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

    • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.

    • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

    • Strong skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.

    • Strong skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

    • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership, and intercultural competence.

    • Ability to gain thorough knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training


    Preferred Qualifications



    • Advanced degree in related area

    • Certification in Threat Assessment and Threat Management

    • Certification in Workplace Assessment of Violence Risk (WAVR-21) or similar tool

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $130, 000 - $145,000



    • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.

    • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
