Being a polytechnic means we deliver technology-based education across our programs; our education is experiential and hands-on; we work in partnership with Industry, and our applied research solves real problems. NAIT’s graduates have the knowledge and skills employers want. They leave NAIT confident, prepared and in demand. The School of Skilled Trades offers apprenticeship, certificate, and diploma training in 42 programs. We deliver practical, hands-on instruction in industry-standard workshops and laboratories.

    Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost, the Dean is the senior academic and administrative officer of the School of Skilled Trades and is a member of the senior leadership team of NAIT. This position is responsible for the oversight of all academic and administrative functions within the School. The Dean is a strong advocate for the School as well as a builder of collaborative relationships both internally and externally to NAIT.

    Key Responsibilities:

    As a NAIT business unit leader, the Dean guides and oversees the academic and operational direction of the School; Develops and implements strategies and efficiencies in alignment with NAIT’s Vison, Promises and Values; Builds strategic relationships with internal leaders and external stakeholders; and participates in the development of NAIT academic strategies and policy development.

    Demonstrating a strong bottom-line orientation and a track record of exceeding goals successfully. Persisting in achieving results and accomplishing objectives despite obstacles and setbacks even under tough circumstances and pushing self and helps others to achieve results while ensuring accountability.
    Using their skills to successfully close and achieve desired outcomes by building an undeniable case, sharing it appropriately and energetically to secure wide support.
    Showing personal commitment to the vision; talking about future possibilities in a positive way; creating milestones to inspire commitment and creating organization-wide energy and optimism for the future then painting a picture of the vision and strategy that motivates others to action.


    The successful candidate has demonstrated success providing senior-level guidance and leadership, and ideally possesses a relevant credential such as a master’s degree or industry designation in a related field.

    They have expertise in building strategic relationships and the ability to interpret and inform broad strategy and policy with a proven track record of influencing decision-makers and teams.

    They excel in working at the strategic level, and have the ability to translate strategy into operations, supporting leaders and staff to undertake initiatives and manage priorities in the context of the School of Skilled Trades and NAIT’s strategic vision.

    Applicants should have the ability and reputation to enable strong advocacy with a demonstrated ability to reach out and build relationships with multiple stakeholders, including community and government leaders.

    Knowledge of the post-secondary system in Alberta - including skilled trades and apprenticeship education - is an asset.
