Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL), in collaboration with several external sponsors (including the USGS and the State of California), conducts seismic research and operates a large number of seismic stations throughout California. These operations require a high volume of financial and other transactions, including in procurement, credit card reconciliation, travel, equipment inventory, construction/capital projects, risk management, and payroll. In addition, the grants require frequent reporting both technical and financial.

This position will support the BSL by managing the credit card reconciliation and equipment inventory processes, processing payroll entries, and performing other financial tasks such as cost transfer journals, analyzing expenses, and formulating budget plans as needed. They will also assist with the non-permanent task of cataloging and dispositioning some of the BSL's historical documents.

40% Under general direction, verifies a significant volume of Blucard receipts and processes/pays a high volume of utility billings; maintains a logical and shared document records system.

10% Under general direction, manages the BSL's equipment inventory processes, working with other staff and with the BETS team. Ensures the BETS is up to date and conducts the biannual BETS audit.

10% Under general direction, collects, analyzes, and journals engineering fuel receipts to allocable funds.

10% Under general supervision, prepares and documents payroll entries in UCPath, as well as retroactive changes.

10% Under direct supervision, prepares adhoc financial and resource reports for future planning.

5% Assists other lab members with procurement issues, including vendor setup.

5% May devise financial tools to help the department better plan its expenditures.

5% May devise new reports to help the department better analyze its full portfolio, to the granular level.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with the Uniform Guidance applicable to academic research institutions.
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit.
  • Displays diplomacy, astute judgment, critical thinking, attention to detail, and mission focus.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize data and documents shared with others.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing complex, variable payroll allocations across funding sources.
  • Intermediate knowledge of financial systems and processes used at UC Berkeley.
  • Demonstrated ability with graphics to present financial data clearly and effectively.
  • Experience with complex pre-Award grant preparation highly desired.
  • Experience preparing recommendations for financial plans, including annual resource allocations, future requirements, and operating forecasts.
  • Experience with post-award management highly desired.
  • Five years' experience in financial analysis or similar position in an academic research setting.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt position; salary is up to $38.32 hourly ($80,000 annually), commensurate with experience.
