The Capital Programs Department is responsible for the design and construction of all capital projects for Tufts University. Working closely with the Planning, Facilities, Operations Control Center and Finance Departments, the department creates and executes the long-range capital renewal plan for the 5.5 million square feet of buildings and infrastructure on our two Boston (Health Sciences in Chinatown and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in the Fenway) campuses, and Grafton (Cummings Veterinary) and Medford/Somerville campuses. Tufts University has a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 or earlier. All the capital and infrastructure projects in the department are a critical component of achieving that goal. The department is responsible for communications with internal and external stakeholders including staff, faculty, senior leadership, trustees, municipalities, and donors.

What You'll Do

The Associate Director, Capital Programs is responsible for managing project managers and their projects. Oversees and reviews project budgets, schedules, risk analysis and stakeholder communication

Essential Functions:

  • Manages internal and external owner project managers to design, permit, bid, construct, turn over and report on capital projects on all four Tufts campuses.
  • Coordinates risk related to budget, schedule and stakeholders with Senior Director.
  • Reviews requests for proposals for design, engineering and construction firms for consistency and adherence to Tufts standards. Manages project budgets in PMWeb, Tufts’ online project management system.
  • Manages project managers to maintain department standards, encourage increased responsibility and growth in the department. Establishes goals, provides coaching, assesses performance, and supports developmental opportunities.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of bachelor’s degree or equivalent in architecture, design, construction, business or related field
  • 10+ years work experience in a related field including managing and training staff, working on multiple projects, reporting to senior leadership and working with external stakeholders
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in architecture, construction management, business or related field
  • Experience managing team of staff members, both internal and external consultants and working on multiple projects in differing stages at one time
  • Training staff for complying with processes, increasing their responsibility and career development
  • High level of understanding of finances, design, construction project management and contract analysis/evaluation
  • Understanding of HVAC equipment and systems, linear infrastructure, decarbonization planning, implementation and incentive rebates is beneficial
