Job Description

Director of Finance, Schaefer School of Engineering and Science

The Director of Finance for the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science (SES) provides management and oversight of financial planning and analysis for SES academic departments and centers. Reporting to the Dean, the Director is responsible for the management of the day-to-day financial demands of SES, supporting faculty with start-up and RIA accounting, supporting department chairs and center directors on annual budget, and management of the budget process for SES.  The Director is also responsible for the preparation of long-range operating and project budgets and forecasts, analyzing past income and expenditure patterns, and making recommendations regarding fiscal planning for departments and centers.


  • Serve as the main point of contact for all fiscal and budget issues for SES.  Act as liaison with the Stevens Finance and Budget offices and the Office of the Provost on such issues.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets for SES academic departments, centers, faculty start-up, and RIA accounts.
  • Direct the processing of daily financial transactions, in Kuali, Workday, and Concur. Supervise the Senior Financial Analyst.
  • Oversee the monthly spending forecasts to create financial reports for all SES, including operating, gift, faculty start-up, and RIA accounts.
  • Oversee the payroll default research accounts for SES academic departments and centers, including the transfer of salaries according to established guidelines from the Office of Research.
  • Work with the Director of Operations and Administration on the budgeting and processing of staff position requests.
  • Oversee the training of new faculty and staff members on the usage of Kuali and reading of financial information, including training workshops on new financial policies and procedures to all SES staff members.
  • Ensure financial compliance with the Stevens policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a variety of financial and other departmental records, documents and reports.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide information to faculty and staff on fiscal policies and procedures.


  • Required Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Preferred Education: MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant field of finance
  • Required Experience: At least 7 years experience in financial management, financial analysis, budget management, and fiscal strategic planning.
  • Preferred Experience: Related finance, budget or accounting experience in Not-for-Profit and/or institution of higher education

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, most specifically Excel, and Tableau software
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate a variety of financial information to individuals at all levels
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to execute and integrate complex financial analyses, and prepare comprehensive budget summaries and projections
  • Advanced financial and mathematical skills
  • Knowledge of finance, budgeting, and cost control procedures
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills with diverse constituents, including the ability to work directly with faculty, staff and other personnel in the Dean’s Office
  • Must have high attention to customer service and an analytical demeanor and mindset
  • Ability to work in a team and individually as well partnering with other university departments
  • Strong written and oral communication skills across all channels
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks with an understanding of priorities
  • Organizational skills with a strong emphasis on attention to detail
  • Strong written communication and public speaking skills
