Departmental Overview

Located within the world's finest public university and one of the most diverse regions in the nation, the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare strives to transform the systems that perpetuate poverty and social disadvantage. Berkeley Social Welfare develops effective leaders and scholars committed to solving complex social problems; produces, disseminates and utilizes research to improve social-service delivery and policy through critical thinking and evidence-based knowledge; and prepares the next generation of culturally-competent social workers, researchers and teachers dedicated to serving the most vulnerable members of our society.

The Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Services administers the School's Student Services and Admissions Office, with primary management responsibility for a wide range of student services functions, including recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student orientation and annual events, undergraduate and graduate advising, and related programs. As a senior-level administrator reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean is a member of the Leadership Team that informs strategic decision-making on all aspects of the School, and is a key advisor particularly on issues and initiatives regarding students and the student experience. As the manager of the student services unit, the Assistant Dean supervises 6 FTE professional advising, admissions and instructional support staff, ensuring that they have the resources needed to effectively support Social Welfare undergraduate and graduate students.


Program Management and Leadership:
  • Responsible for the overall leadership and management of the functions for recruiting and admissions; academic advising; class scheduling, enrollment and registration; degrees; student financial assistance; student information systems data management; and student life programming.
  • Formulates the vision, goals, and objectives of student services to achieve outstanding student experience; conducts ongoing strategic and longrange planning efforts, budgeting and student services program implementation in to ensure alignment with the School's defined mission.
  • Provides direction to students, faculty and staff on complex academic and student affairs policy issues; identifies issues that have significant organizational impact or future implications and advises employees and School leadership accordingly.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of admissions, advising and student services functions, and makes changes to the program to provide better service to students, faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Develops and implements new student services procedures in service to the goals of improving efficiency and enhancing the overall student experience.
  • Participates in external accreditation and internal program review processes, submissions, and follow-up actions.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with academic policies governing the School's academic programs.

People Management and Development:
  • Supervises five (5) professional staff responsible for student services and advising functions, providing direction, coaching and mentorship around student development, academic advising theory, and best practices.
  • Supervises one (1) Instructional Design Specialist with independent responsibility for Learning Management System.
  • Establishes and operationalizes student services unit standards for employee communication, teamwork, business processes, and stakeholder services focus; provides team members with clear direction and support in meeting their servicedelivery objectives.
  • Manages employee performance, following established campus standards for comprehensive performance management; guides, coaches, and mentors staff; develops and executes performance management plans for staff not meeting established standards.
  • Makes decisions on performance, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff; recommends salary actions affecting managed staff.

  • Implements, monitors, evaluates and supervises administration of admissions policies established by the faculty for the School's academic programs (BASW, MSW and PhD).
  • Collaborates with faculty and students to plan, develop, organize, and execute strategies for recruiting and admitting graduate students, with a focus on the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of admissions and/or recruitment programs and makes changes to recruitment strategies to enhance yield.
  • Determines business processes and workflow for admissions application review; provides direction to faculty and professional admissions staff responsible for conducting admissions application reviews.
  • Reviews difficult and complex admissions cases, and provides direction to professional admissions advisors and faculty reviewers on the more complex issues encountered.
  • Monitors departmental compliance with UC and Berkeley campus admissions policies and procedures.

  • Administers academic policies established by the faculty for the School's academic programs (BASW, MSW and PhD).
  • Develops academic business processes for student academic advising and manages workflow of professional advising staff.
  • Routinely manages sensitive and confidential matters, and develops solutions on a wide range of issues impacting student progress; provides case management or conflict mediation for ongoing issues with students of concern.
  • Provides technical assistance and advising policy/procedural guidance to professional advising staff, individual faculty advisors and academic program committees.
  • Provides direction to professional student services advisors on the more complex issues encountered.
  • Administers student conduct, grievance and appeal procedures, coordinating investigative and related activities with faculty, the Dean's Office, Office of Student Conduct, and other relevant campus units.
  • Manages and negotiates start-of-term problems such as class size, over and under enrollments, and unbalanced sections; identifies low-enrolling or otherwise underperforming courses and recommends appropriate action to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Provides direction to staff responsible for class scheduling data entry; validating/ensuring accuracy of each term's Class Schedule and Instructional Record (CSIR) dataset; and student enrollment management.

Financial Management:
  • Plans and oversees non-compensation operational budget for Student Services unit.
  • Plans and oversees budget for graduate student financial support; allocates and oversees awarding of approximately $2 million in student financial assistance annually from a variety of sources, including university, campus and departmental fellowships; return-to-aid funds; federal training grant stipends available as student financial aid; and professional development awards for graduate students.
  • Develops business processes for awarding student aid; supervises and trains staff responsible for Award Entry; provides direction to staff for troubleshooting issues impacting student aid disbursement.
  • Advises and instructs faculty review committees on annual fellowship program parameters, eligibility criteria, and selection and awarding processes.
  • Generates unit budget and student financial aid reports using Finance reporting dashboards in CalAnswers; uses financial management reporting data to make decisions about continuous quality improvements to departmental graduate student funding programs.

Student Culture and Climate:
  • Provides advice and direction on issues and initiatives regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, culture, and climate as they relate to students.
  • Partner with the School's Leadership Team to develop action plans to achieve a more inclusive and diverse School environment.

External Leadership:
  • Liaises with other campus units, organizations and external agencies to advance the mission of the School and its programs.
  • Cultivates and maintains mutually beneficial professional relationships and alliances inside and outside the organization.
  • Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience in college-level student services program development, implementation, and analysis in relation to educational policies, trends, and university policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer application programs commonly used in higher education admissions and student services administration.
  • Experience in recruiting, advising, and/or counseling historically underrepresented students as well as students from a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Experience with managing direct reports, as well as with leading cross-functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting relationship.
  • Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem identification and creative problem solving, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and analysis, organizational skills, emotional intelligence and cultural humility.
  • Experience utilizing quantitative and qualitative data to identify areas in need of improvement; experience with monitoring/assessing processes and carrying out process improvement efforts.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, change management, program implementation and evaluation, and managing across multiple important priorities.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuade others, and lead.
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, in a timely manner, with a high volume of work in a complex working environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; demonstrated effectiveness in building teams and collaborations; ability to adapt as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Master's degree in social work or other closely related professional field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Salary starts at $125,000.00, annually.
