Position Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean/Chief Business Officer, the Assistant Director for HR and Business Operations is responsible for managing all human resources and business operations functions within the School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP). We are seeking dynamic candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in HR administration and project management that contributes toward building an equitable and diverse academic environment. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to serve as a personnel manager, project manager, and key member of the business office working in partnership with the five academic departments in support of academic resource planning and ensuring consistent and effective business practices.

Key areas of responsibilities include:

Personnel Management: Oversee recruitment and hiring for all positions (state, RF, UBF), search committee advisement and training, personnel transactions, offer letter and startup packages, employee onboarding/separation process, and performance management for the school. Plan, coordinate, and manage the school’s annual New Employee Welcome (orientation) for faculty and staff.

Project Management: Plan and coordinate business systems implementations for the school, examples include UB scholarship portal, travel and expense reimbursement system, and online performance programs and evaluations. Organize and facilitate trainings, anticipate obstacles and develop plans for successful project completion.

Workforce Planning: Support the chief business officer (CBO) with the development of workforce planning budgets and work collaboratively with department chairs and administrators on managing the school-wide hiring plan. Identify and employ strategies to enhance the recruitment and retention of a diverse, high-performing faculty and staff workforce.

Proactively develop and implement new workflow processes and procedures aimed at increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of HR, finance, and business operations in the school.

Support the CBO on strategy and decision-making, data analysis, and school-wide resource planning and annual budgeting process. Contribute to advancing the school’s strategic plan with a focus on the goals related to resource allocation and efficiency, and diversity and inclusion. Assist with responding to internal/external analysis and reporting needs, assuring timely, accurate, consistent and complete responses.

Serve as liaison for the school with other university departments including Human Resources, Office of the Provost, Office of Equity Diversity and Inclusion, Financial Management, Employee Relations, and Business Services.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree
Two years professional experience in human resources or business administration
Demonstrated experience in project management
Strong interpersonal communication skills, including verbal and written, active listening and critical thinking. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations.
Ability to handle restricted and sensitive information. Ability to maintain confidentiality, attention to detail, and accuracy in all areas of responsibility.
Possess a strong sense of accountability and be self-motivated. Must be able to work independently with minimal direction and exhibit good judgment.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree
Demonstrated experience in human resource management
Strong presentation skills, specifically the ability to create training materials and provide effective and engaging training
Experience in a higher education setting, working with faculty, staff, and students
Experience with University at Buffalo policies and procedures.
Familiarity with UB systems (UB Jobs, ePTF, SIRI, Concur, ShopBlue, AcademicWorks, Tableau)
Familiarity with budgeting and workforce planning
