Departmental Overview

The University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) department strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduates and graduate students, and friends of the university, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen development with campus fundraisers.

Annual Programs is a division of UDAR and is the university's largest fundraising department, responsible for engaging thousands of alumni, parents, and students as donors and volunteers each year. The goals of this department are to: 1) increase the number of annual donors, 2) significantly raise the amount of discretionary funds for the Chancellor, the deans and program directors, and 3) identify campaign/major donors for the campus. Programs include the Parent and Family Philanthropy program, Pipeline Development, and Direct Response Marketing. The department is made up of 33 employees and raises $13-$15 million in private contributions each year.

The Parent and Family Philanthropy program is designed to raise funds from, and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for, parents and families of undergraduate UC Berkeley students. An increasingly important campus constituency, Berkeley parents contribute over $13M in annual support each year through staff, volunteer, direct mail, and student caller solicitations. In addition, members of the Berkeley parent community support the University as volunteers through the Cal Parents Ambassador program.

The Office of Parent and Family Philanthropy, seeks two energetic and experienced fundraisers to solicit philanthropic gifts from current Cal parents supporting key cross-divisional programs that impact student experience services across the UC Berkeley campus. The Assistant Directors of Development are philanthropic content leaders in areas impacting student experience and success and parent interests and philanthropy.

These positions will help build and realize the full potential of parent fundraising and engagement in the state of California. The Assistant Directors, Parent and Family Philanthropy, will share responsibility for the fundraising endeavors of the office along with one other major gift officer and the Director; these positions report directly to the Director. These roles will involve designing, developing, delivering, and administering fundraising programs to grow our parent philanthropic initiatives in California. These positions will not only identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential parent-donors but will spend approximately 40-50% of travel time to visit, cultivate and solicit parent-donors. One of these two positions will spend 10% of their time facilitating key philanthropy events.

These positions will be respected team players, part of a six-person staff in Parent and Family Philanthropy, which reports to Annual Programs within UDAR at the campus level.

Responsibilities

Proactively manage a portfolio of 100-125 individual major gift prospects, who have the capacity to give between $100,000 and $250,000. Make at least 10-12 in-person visits per month plus substantive contacts to advance the donor relationship. Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. Ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met. Uses Prospect Management liaison to actively identify and add/subtract parent-prospects from their portfolio on an ongoing basis.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards donors.
  • Manages a portfolio of 100-125 major gift prospects who have the capacity to give $100K or more over a four year period.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and raises funds in the high six figures once established with an appropriate portfolio.
  • Maintains a schedule conducive to occasional overnight travel to qualify, cultivate and solicit parent donors.
  • Coordinates cultivation and solicitation activities as primary manager for numerous parent-prospects with multiple interests across campus. Work collaboratively with other unit fundraisers to create strategies for parent-prospects with unit-specific interests.
  • Participates in short and long-range strategic planning for the Parent and Family Philanthropy Office in collaboration with other staff members and the Director.
  • (Position 1 of 2 only; 10% of role) Recruits, prepares, and supports key parent prospect-volunteers who assist in advancement efforts, such as hosting Welcome Receptions in their home, hosting special regional-based advancement receptions/dinners in their home or club, or facilitating parent-to-parent donor solicitation.


Required Qualifications

  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Thorough written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
  • Thorough project management skills.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Travel and overnight stays are expected as well as some evening and weekend work.


Education

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum three years' experience in annual fund or major gift fundraising and/or equivalent training or experience.
