Our culture of openness, freedom and belonging make it a special place for students, faculty and staff.

The University of California, Berkeley, is one of the world's leading institutions of higher education, distinguished by its combination of internationally recognized academic and research excellence; the transformative opportunity it provides to a large and diverse student body; its public mission and commitment to equity and social justice; and its roots in the California experience, animated by such values as innovation, questioning the status quo, and respect for the environment and nature. Departmental Overview

The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) has the mission of enhancing the research enterprise of the world's best public university by establishing multifaceted collaborations with companies. IPIRA consists of two peer divisions: the Industry Alliances Office and the Office of Technology Licensing.

The Industry Alliances Office (IAO) works with UC Berkeley employees and companies to enable innovative research relationships, negotiating all research contracts with private industry. The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) maximizes the commercialization of UC Berkeley's innovations by establishing relationships and contractual agreements that benefit the public, support campus research and education, and reward inventors for their ingenuity.

IPIRA reports to the Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer and the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Application Review Date

The minimum posting duration of this position is 14 calendar days. The department will not initiate the application review process before June 8, 2022

Responsibilities

This role is the overall client-services lead for Berkeley's tech transfer (IPIRA) group, a position which currently does not exist. This person will proactively and regularly reach out to clients, both external and internal (e.g., faculty). It will be an important face for Berkeley's tech transfer effectiveness. The successful applicant will be a relationship person. An extrovert. A communicator. A problem-solver. They will be client-focused while understanding that meeting client needs must be balanced with attending to Berkeley's and California's best interests. The position is decidedly not a licensing or industry alliances officer role - we have expert teams dedicated to this. The role is designed to support the licensing and industry-alliances teams, connecting clients with IPIRA people and resources.

Funders: The Client Services Manager helps to define a top funder-client list (perhaps 30 to start) based on metrics that will be defined collaboratively with others; set a goal to connect in some way with one funder every day; develop a list of the top-10 things that funders find most valuable from Berkeley (other than better economic terms more narrowly); link funders to players in the Berkeley ecosystem that fit their needs, including I&E leaders, faculty, and postdocs.

Founders: Collaboratively develop the criteria for and define a top founder-client list (perhaps 20 to start); set a goal to connect in some way with one founder every day; develop a list of the top-10 things that founders find most valuable from Berkeley; link founders to players in the Berkeley ecosystem that fit their needs, including I&E leaders, faculty, and postdocs.

Corporations: Collaboratively develop the criteria for and define a top company-client list (perhaps 30 to start); set a goal to connect in some way with one company every day; develop a list of the top-10 things that corporations find most valuable from Berkeley; link corporate partners to players in the Berkeley ecosystem that fit their needs, including I&E leaders, faculty, and postdocs.

Faculty: Define a top faculty-client list (perhaps 40 to start); connect faculty in a curated way to elements of the I&E ecosystem; stay in close touch with the licensing and industry alliances officers who work most closely with those faculty; make it clear that the role is not about negotiating licenses and other contracts, but facilitating and liaising with those offices that do.

Postdocs: Collaboratively develop the criteria for and define a top postdoc-client list (perhaps 20 to start); connect postdocs in a curated way to elements of the I&E ecosystem; work in alignment with existing Postdoc-facing programs (BPEP and PostX).

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provides input to research program leadership regarding major drivers of success in the marketplace and the perception of strength of those drivers within campus divisions. Applies industry knowledge to collaborate in strategic processes to reshape commercialization and innovation activities.
  • Develops target marketing and master outreach strategy to stimulate industry and corporate research collaborations. Markets the University's research expertise. Identifies strategies to improve opportunities for marketing and outreach of research advances.
  • Communicates with internal teams/offices for strategy guidance, message development, lead sharing, and more. Successfully hands off or introduces cultivated external relationships to internal transactional teams. Serves as an advisor and resource to internal teams by providing information regarding partnership issues and industry trends and proactively influencing the formulation of policy and practices. Builds bridges between existing campus efforts and research programs to advance the strategic industry partnership agenda.
