The University of Missouri – St. Louis
The University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), the largest public university in eastern Missouri and one of four institutions of the University of Missouri System, invites nominations and applications for the position of Chancellor. Serving as UMSL’s Chief Executive Officer, the Chancellor will play an integral role in growing vital research and scholarship, fostering impactful teaching and student success efforts, enhancing the culture of philanthropy, and performing effective engagement with the citizens of Missouri and beyond to support these activities. The university is primed to bring in a dynamic and inclusive leader who can broadly leverage the dedicated and talented people of UMSL who proudly serve the learners, communities, and industries of St. Louis, the state, the region, the nation, and the world.
Led by 800 full-time faculty members across 10 schools and colleges, UMSL offers an array of options to traditional and non-traditional students. It offers 15 doctoral and 33 additional graduate degree programs, numerous bachelor and certificate programs, and over 900 online, night and weekend courses per semester. Its yearly research expenditures are over $27 million and growing, with total operation expenditures and matching revenues of over $200 million. With a total enrollment of more than 16,000 students, UMSL provides excellent learning experiences and leadership opportunities for a diverse student body. Ranked No. 1 in Missouri for affordability by Business Insider, UMSL students enjoy the best educational value in the state.
As a relatively young institution (established in 1963) with roots as a community-focused learning center, UMSL has grown to become a metropolitan teaching and research institution and is considered a primary driver of the St. Louis economy, registering with a $360+ million annual economic impact. UMSL proudly and significantly contributes to educating the workforce of St. Louis, providing industries with capable employees, many of whom have grown to be industry leaders counted among its 100,000 UMSL alumni. Across the country, many public institutions would envy the opportunities for philanthropy, civic and corporate partnership, and workforce development that UMSL possesses and the next Chancellor will inherit.
Reporting directly to University of Missouri System President Mun Y. Choi, the Chancellor will set an example of respect for the constituents of the university, and in partnership with the provost, deans and faculty across the university, will be expected to ensure that generative scholarship is both invested in and published broadly to all Missouri citizens. The Chancellor will emphasize transformational pedagogy and research-infused learning as drivers of student access and success, and will help UMSL’s talented leaders to envision new conduits for collaboration within and outside academia, with the goal of safeguarding and enhancing the student experience. The Chancellor will serve as the chief spokesperson for UMSL and will have a visible leadership role in the St. Louis civic, business and cultural community.
The Chancellor will look to build upon the existing traditions, distinctiveness, and strengths of the university for future contributions. In this past year, UMSL has developed and adopted a transformative, collaborative, and transparent plan for excellence: We Transform Lives. This new plan provides the Chancellor an incredible opportunity to lead the great work that is already happening at UMSL each day, and to further its relationships with the communities, industry and broader populations.
The search committee is co-chaired by Dr. Beth Huebner, Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice and Mr. Kirk Richter, former Vice President and Treasurer for Sigma-Aldrich, and current UMSL Chancellor’s Council Member and alum.
