The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking an Assistant Athletics Director, Major Gifts who will work within the Cal Athletics Fund unit and will manage the Major Gifts team for the department.
This position is responsible for assisting the Chief Development Officer with the design, planning, and executive of a Major Gifts program for Intercollegiate Athletics, through the management and supervision of the Major Gifts unit, including a team of up to 7 major gifts fundraisers. The success of the Major Gifts program is reliant on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift-level prospective donors capable of contributing $100,000 or more. Along with management of the Major Gifts team, this position will also have a Major Gift portfolio and be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift-level prospective donors.
The Cal Athletics Fund is the fundraising and alumni relations arm of UC Berkeley's Intercollegiate Athletics Department, Cal Athletics. This position is responsible for helping to meet the fundraising objectives of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and ensuring that predetermined fundraising goals with regard to annual gifts are met.
- The Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts (Team Lead) supervises a program responsible for raising critical unrestricted and sometimes sport specific private support for the Department of Athletics.
- Direct management of the Major Gifts team, up to 7 employees, through directing and providing leadership to achieve the goals of the unit and organization.
- Manages the work of professional and support staff involved in the implementation of multi-component fundraising programs.
- Conceive, create, develop, implement, evaluate and oversee fundraising programs and strategies to meet predetermined goals and objectives, and ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met.
- Manage a portfolio of major gift donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors, typically with the capacity to give $100,000 or more.
- Make at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship).
- Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly.
- Collaborate with the athletics and campus development team to plan and execute events and other tailored outreach programs; attend and entertain prospects at other events and programs as necessary.
- Develops, creates, writes, implements, and/or evaluates individualized marketing plans and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning, or corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
- Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares senior management to present proposals.
- Facilitate communication between administrators, coaches, donors, prospects and volunteers, as appropriate.
- Evaluates programs using feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.
- Apply knowledge and understanding of the University of California, Berkeley and Intercollegiate Athletics, its traditions, programs, campus issues, needs, and priorities to the development process.
- Persuasively discuss athletic programs, needs and priorities with prospective donors and volunteers.
- Experience meeting or exceeding fundraising goals and objectives.
- Knowledge and extensive experience in all aspects of fundraising and donor/customer relations in a university or corporate environment.
- Ability to oversee multiple projects and quickly discern complex and competing interests.
- Outstanding organizational, analytical, problem resolution and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the campus and with external constituencies.
- A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated managerial experience and success in fundraising, preferably in a university environment.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and with quick time-frames to deliver outcomes towards goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, and execution.
- Demonstrated experience and interest in personal solicitation of major gifts.
- Ability to handle internal and external challenges in a tactful and professional manner.
- Knowledge of the athletics environment including relevant issues including ticket sales, merchandising, revenue generation, and/or direct appeals within an athletics department and/or higher education or a corporate environment.
- Ability to work across multiple databases and CRM systems.
- Ability to travel and attend weekend and evening events.
- Skill to maintain confidentiality.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent training/experience.

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
