Position Summary:

Chief of Staff & External Affairs. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director of Government Affairs serves as lead Government and Legislative Liaison for the University to provide support, direction and leadership as part of a team that works at state level with the Governor's Office, Legislature. Works on state policy and collaborates with regulatory and fiscal agencies; at federal level, works with U.S. Congress and federal agencies.

Essential Functions

  • Provides support to University leadership to keep Georgia Southern University in the forefront for state funding, support and involvement in state growth.
  • Works in coordination with the University System of Georgia to represent the interests of Georgia Southern University before members of the Georgia General Assembly, the Offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor, and other local, state, and federal governmental offices and agencies.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships among a diverse constituency to include businesses, key opinion leaders, public interest groups, key legislative staff, and local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Develops and manages University strategy designed to engage elected officials and government agencies to maximize success and garner support for institutional initiatives.
  • Develops holistic plan to advocate and secure state and federal funding priorities.
  • Monitors and provides integrated policy analysis and strategic consultation to President and senior leadership on legislative/policy matters and budgetary processes of institutional importance.
  • Arranges campus visits between government leaders, legislators, staff, and campus colleagues to highlight research, programmatic, and partnership initiatives; provides interaction with students in a classroom environment.
  • Works in coordination with University partners to support the state and federal legislative internship program.
  • Represents the University at external engagements in support of Georgia Southern's priorities.
  • Assists with development, communications and community relations activities.

Bachelors Degree

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Effective communication (verbal and written), organization and human relations skills; ability to work well in a diverse environment; proficiency with computer and Microsoft Office Applications software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; legally authorized to work in the United States; successful completion of background investigation prior to employment

Preferred Education:

Masters Degree

Preferred Experience::

Experience in a public university or non-profit setting

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
