The University of California, Berkeley is building a comprehensive program in Jewish and Israel Studies (JIS) that explores Jewish life and thought over time and throughout the world. The Program includes the Center for Jewish Studies (CJS), the Magnes Collection for Jewish Art and Life (Magnes), and the Berkeley Institute for Jewish Life and Israel Studies (Berkeley Institute). JIS is committed to the rigorous academic study of the wide-ranging Jewish experience and to fostering a welcoming environment for students pursuing knowledge and engagement in this area. As well, UC Berkeley's Jewish and Israel Studies program will highlight the study of the history, beliefs, texts and cultural practices of the Jewish people and of Israel in the context of society at large and the vitality and continuity of Jewish life.
The Director of Development for the Center for Jewish Studies and the Magnes Collection for Jewish Art and Life will design, develop, deliver, and administer a highly successful fundraising program to support the CJS and the Magnes, and co-coordinate the Jewish and Israel Studies campaign (JISC) with the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute. The Director will identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and will cultivate, solicit and steward donor prospects alone or in partnership with JIS faculty directors and campus leadership.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Development, Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, the Director will work closely with the faculty directors of the above named entities and campus leadership to develop solicitation strategies and proposals for the highest capacity donors. The Director will be responsible for directing the identification of new donor prospects and will cultivate, solicit and steward donor prospects personally and/or in partnership with the faculty directors and campus leadership. S/he, in coordination with the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute, will be the JISC leads on joint efforts with fundraisers from across campus and in University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR).
- Serves as lead development professional for the Center for Jewish Studies and the Magnes, and co-coordinator of the campus Jewish and Israel Studies campaign, and is responsible, in coordination with the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute for developing an overall strategic fundraising plan in consultation with the faculty directors of CJS, the Magnes, and the Berkeley Institute, as well as other campus stakeholders including the Assistant Dean of Development, Arts & Humanities.
- Manages a portfolio of 60-80 donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors. Make at least 10 -12 visits per month. Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly.
- Working with the JIS faculty directors, develops, creates, writes, implements, and/or evaluates individualized proposals (sometimes in conjunction with University Development and Alumni Relations marketing/communications) and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning, or corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
- Presents individualized fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares academic faculty directors and/or senior management to present proposals.
- Serves as a resource for the CJS and Magnes faculty leads, to provide information, advice and counsel regarding those units' initiatives, as well as serving, along with the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute, as campus convener of fund raising partners across Berkeley that may engage with JIS.
- Creates, establishes and evaluates methods for building/maintaining prospect and volunteer constituencies and identifies, recruits, and directs the activities of high level volunteers.
- Works closely with academic leadership of JIS and the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute, to analyze needs and create strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs and may have the authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.
- Serves, in coordination with the Development Director of the Berkeley Institute, as the campus convener of fundraising partners across Berkeley who represent the various academic disciplines engaged with JIS.
- Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising strategies, donor relations and advancement communications.
- Expert knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including current issues of concern for both the campus and throughout higher education generally with particular focus on the goals of the Jewish and Israel Studies campaign.
- Expert knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Expert knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
- Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.
- Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and in securing gifts.
- Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
- Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
- Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Certified Fund Raising Executive preferred.
