Overview
The FHSA-Hospital Administrator will provide leadership for the hospital staff to provide a progressive approach to the delivery of veterinary services in an education teaching hospital environment, help create an efficient and supportive clinical environment, and contribute to responsible fiscal management in the hospital. Accountable for identifying and resolving operational inefficiencies in the hospital through development and implementation of appropriate processes, procedures, fee setting, and staffing plans. Responsible to manage daily operations and to assist with budget setting and managing to the budget, while supporting clinical, education, and research missions. Due to the complexity of the teaching hospital environment, management of the facility must be conducted in a manner that empowers staff to actively participate in achieving the teaching hospital’s vision and goals through involvement in planning, policy-setting, and implementation. Supervise direct reports and provides overall leadership to approximately 150 professional and non-professional staff in FHSA. Support the work of approximately 55 faculty, 55 residents, and 20 interns. Serve as part of the FHSA Management Group, working closely with the FHSA Hospital Director, the Associate Medical Directors, the Assistant Nursing Directors, and the CVSG Chief Administrative Officer. Involvement in strategic analysis and decision making, guiding the future of the FHSA in support of the school’s strategic vision.
What You'll Do
Over-all management of hospital operations
- Over-all management of hospital operations to support the clinical, educational, and research missions of the FHSA and the School.
- Work collaboratively with the faculty, staff, FHSA Management Group, the FHSA Hospital Advisory Board, and School leadership to identify and solve problems and to support short-term and long-term operational and strategic planning.
- Oversight of the following hospital functions and staff: client services, pharmacy, medical records, electronic medical records, and other key roles.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and implement best practices and systematic changes within the hospital to address identified problems. Facilitate and coordinate communication and collaboration between hospital operational support groups, hospital sections, staff, faculty, and hospital management.
- Develop and implement polices and processes to enhance operational efficiency of the FHSA, while supporting excellent clinical care, and ensuring the safety and well-being of staff, students, clients, and patients
- Leadership and guidance for over-all operational procedures and processes. Ensure procedures are compliant with school, university, and government policies.
- Oversee over-all FHSA client communications, marketing, and public relations to ensure that the hospital has an adequate and appropriate clinical caseload. This involves collaborating with Cummings School Communications and Marketing Office
Fiscal and Budgetary Responsibilities
- Partnering with the Chief Administrative Officer and the FHSA Director to ensure financial and operational success of the hospital. This includes ensuring that the hospital operates in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Works closely with the CVSG CAO to ensure appropriate financial tracking and analysis of FHSA revenues and expenditures, particularly with regards to helping establish and maintain appropriate pricing models. This position will partner in the creation of the FHSA hospital budgets and provide oversight of expenditures, including the monitoring of revenues and expenditures in the completion of monthly projections compared to budget.
- Assist hospital and school leadership with operational and capital decisions that have a direct financial impact.
- Provides leadership in managing accounts receivable.
- Assist in developing research support financial models that function to support the school and its research mission.
Clinical assets and infrastructure planning and management
- Provides oversight and management of space and clinical assets in the FHSA, working closely with the Clinical Assets Manager, the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Director of Clinical Technology
- Helps to coordinate purchasing and investments in the FHSA.
- Develops yearly Capital Equipment Requests for the FHSA and supervise development of planning activities
- Plays a collaborative role with capital projects associated with the FHSA
General Leadership and Communication Responsibilities
- Facilitate and coordinate communication and collaboration between hospital operational support groups, hospital sections, staff, faculty, and hospital management.
- Deliver operational management including supervision, work direction, team-building, and problem-solving. Be a patient and understanding mentor to individuals /groups in the hospital.
- Oversee over-all FHSA client communications, marketing, and public relations to ensure that the hospital has an adequate and appropriate clinical caseload. This involves collaborating with Cummings School Communications and Marketing Office
Other responsibilities
- Engage directly in clinical services and educational activities of the FHSA and the School in order to have a broad understanding of the mission, goals, and challenges.
- Work with FHSA management group, faculty, and staff to integrate teaching and research missions into the hospital operations through effective communication and appropriate policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Other responsibilities and duties as required and requested from time to time by the school and university leadership.
What We're Looking For
Minimum Required Experience, Education, Background, And Certifications/Licenses
- The following required knowledge and skills as typically acquired by completing bachelor’s degree and five + years of experience in a managerial position in a veterinary or human medical setting, including management of people. Must have a strong understanding of clinical care and clinic/hospital operations, with an excellent appreciation of team-based care.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Strong collaboration and negotiation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong organizational skills and capable of managing multiple competing priorities.
- High degree of emotional intelligence.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and gain confidence of colleagues and subordinates; to show professionalism; to understand complex interpersonal interactions, to identify trends and see opportunities; to be stimulated by difficulties and gain satisfaction from analysis and development of strategy for creative responses.
- Detail and customer oriented (internal and external).
- Experience in Excel, Word, and project management software. Previous experience or ability to learn electronic medical record system to support and understand needs of the CSVG.
Preferred:
- Advanced training in veterinary medicine (e.g. DVM or equivalent), health care, or business management is highly valued.
- Preference will be given to those with management experience in veterinary hospitals.
- Previous experience leading large projects and coordinating teams
- Equipment and infrastructure experience
- Experience or knowledge of electronic medical record systems considered an asset
- Ability to remain calm under pressure
- Flexibility with work schedule is needed, as occasional evening and weekend work may be required to address emerging issues.
Pay Range
Minimum $136,200.00, Midpoint $170,250.00, Maximum $204,300.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
