Primary Function
The interim dean (hereafter, "dean") is the academic leader and chief administrative officer of the college and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost for aspects of the operation of the college, including its instructional, research and scholarly activities, outreach, engagement, and public-service mission. In carrying out responsibilities, the dean consults advisory bodies within the college and follows the policies and procedures of the college and the university. The dean is the senior administrative representative of the college in interacting with internal and external stakeholders. This is an interim appointment that will begin on January 1, 2021 with an end date of June 30, 2021. It is expected that the person who is chosen for this position will not be a candidate for the permanent position.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
Provide leadership in establishing appropriate mission, goals, and short-term and long-term plans for the college that support the university’s mission. The interim dean will perform all of the duties of a permanent dean:

  • Recruit, assign workload, and supervise school and department chairs and directors, associate and assistant deans, other college administrators, and staff to support the needs of the college and its units.
  • Demonstrate commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students.
  • Recommend tenure, promotion and sabbatical leaves of appropriate classifications of employees by adhering to college and university policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate employees and recommend personnel actions such as reappointment, merit assignment, progressive discipline, remediation and discharge or termination according to university policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership in educational program development, accreditation, assessment, review, revision and/or deletion consistent with the mission of the college and the university.
  • Manage and allocate resources (budget, space, etc.) to support the mission of the college and its units.
  • Support ongoing fundraising efforts related to the college’s goals and the goals of its departments, programs and initiatives by working collaboratively with the Division of University Advancement and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as the spokesperson for the college and communicate effectively with various constituencies within the university, and with alumni, donors, external partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Handle other duties related to the position as assigned by the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

  • A tenured appointment as a full professor at NIU.
  • Demonstrated capacity to recruit and retain diverse faculty, staff and students.
  • Evidence of effective communication, budgetary and management skills; outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills, personal ethics and personal integrity.
  • Progressive administrative experience in leading an academic unit, department, or college.

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Knowledge and understanding of the academic departments within CHHS
  • Experience with program accreditation
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and develop innovative and strategic opportunities in support of the college’s mission
  • Demonstrated ability to expand and build partnerships to support initiatives in the college
