Departmental Overview

The Henry Wheeler Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases (CEND) at UC Berkeley is a multidisciplinary research alliance committed to advancing global health through pioneering research, innovation, and education. Our mission is to combat diseases that threaten underserved and vulnerable populations worldwide by leveraging innovative, multi-disciplinary approaches to develop transformative solutions that improve health outcomes, enhance disease prevention, and promote equitable access to care. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and engaging with both local and international partners, we strive to address the most pressing health challenges of our time and drive meaningful impact in the fight against emerging and neglected diseases.

The Program Director develops and implements the Center's existing programs and provide a vision for growth. Current activities include annual symposia, research trainee fellowships, international training workshops and conferences, regional scientific convenings, and visiting scholar programs. The center serves as a hub for international health sciences research at UC Berkeley and as a coordinating body for infectious disease research in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and contributes to the Center's fundraising efforts by establishing and managing relationships with private donors, philanthropic organizations, and campus development staff. This role is pivotal in developing and executing the Center's fundraising strategy, securing substantial financial resources to sustain and grow its research programs. The incumbent works closely with donors and philanthropic entities, shaping the narrative and aligning the Center's research initiatives with their philanthropic goals. In addition, the role actively identifies and capitalizes on new funding opportunities, ensuring the Center's continued competitiveness and innovation in an evolving grant landscape.
  • Fosters and strengthens relationships between UC Berkeley and UCSF faculty to coordinate and maximize connections with international sites and resources, playing a critical role in advancing the Center's global research mission. This includes cultivating high-level relationships with international academic institutions, industry partners, and pharmaceutical companies to drive global knowledge exchange and impactful research collaborations. By facilitating strategic partnerships with universities in developing nations, this role directly influences the Center's ability to address infectious diseases on a global scale. Additionally, the position ensures that collaborative efforts align with the Center's long-term goals, coordinating strategic meetings and engagements that result in actionable partnerships benefiting both faculty and global research initiatives.
  • Stimulates and organizes research efforts of UC Berkeley faculty to develop new programs that align with the Center's global research mission. This includes seeking out new partnerships among UC Berkeley and other Bay Area research groups by participating in campus seminars and area-wide symposia to identify new faculty and emerging areas of activity in global health. To support these efforts, the incumbent will identify potential connections with industry partners with shared interests, as well as work closely with faculty to prepare federal research grant proposals.
  • Manages program staff and oversees the planning and implementation of CEND training programs, annual campus events, seminar series, and international meetings. This includes working the Faculty Director of the Alliance for Global Health to organize the yearly Summer Training Program in East Africa. Likewise, this position will coordinate with UCSF to organize the activities of the strong tuberculosis research community between the two campuses, including coordinating with the UCSF Center for TB Research to carry out the activities of the multi-campus UC TB Research Advancement Center (TRAC). This position is also key for organizing campus symposia, including the yearly CEND Symposium and BayViro Symposium.
  • Generate CEND publicity through the development and maintenance of the CEND website, print materials, and outreach to news media for coverage. A key role of this position is to increase awareness of CEND activities at the local and national level. The incumbent will do this at various levels, the most important of which is by working with the existing development team to maintain a vibrant and engaging website. Likewise, the position will be responsible for engaging local news media to highlight successful programs to a lay audience, as well as to promote CEND events that are open to the public, e.g. the annual CEND Symposium.

Required Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in an appropriate field (biological sciences, public health, chemistry, epidemiology, or another relevant discipline)
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated team management skills.
  • Familiar with scientific research and training in academic settings at some level and be able to report on the outcomes of this program in reports, scientific meetings, grant proposals, and non-technical communications.
  • Can travel 5% for events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in biological sciences, bioengineering, chemistry, epidemiology, or another relevant quantitative discipline, with a focus on infectious diseases and immunology research.
  • Experience networking and collaborating with a broad range of scientists in low-- and middle-income countries, for example through relationships with Wellcome, Pasteur, CDC-affiliated research institutions, or top universities abroad.
  • Experience working on "global health" research challenges and/or conducting biomedical and health sciences research in less developed settings abroad.
  • Familiarity with the major challenges in infectious disease biology, host---pathogen research, vaccinology, drug discovery, and/or diagnostics development. Qualified to support scientific grant writing in these areas.
  • Familiar with, and engaged with, the major foundations, donors, product development partnerships, advocacy groups, and technical organizations involved in neglected disease R&D and global health.
  • Fluency with industry norms in the biotech sector, particularly past experience working in biotech/pharma or working with industry partners. Familiarity with processes involved in translational research and/or regulatory approval.
  • Experience managing a scientific program in an academic or industry setting.

Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time, career position. This position is eligible for up to 20% remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $88,900 - $129,000, annually. The higher end of the salary would be reflective of a candidate with five years of experience in global health and/or demonstrated success in fundraising.
