Assistant Vice President (AVP), Human Resources and Strategic Initiatives plays a crucial role in providing leadership and development of human resource services, policies, and programs in support of Stevens mission and strategic priorities related to HR operations, employee relations, compliance and policy management, and administration. The AVP also acts as a senior HR leader and represents the division when asked or the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer is unavailable.  


  • The AVP will manage, mentor, and train a team of approximately 4 HR professionals, overseeing various functions, including HR operations, employee relations, compliance, policy management, and administration. 

  • Serve as a senior HR leader and represent the division when asked or the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer is not available.  

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of a multi-year strategic plan in collaboration with the Vice President, and Chief Human Resources Officer, and senior HR leadership.  

  • Oversee the HR Operations function and collaborate with HR leadership to establish operational plans to support the division strategy and deliver high service and efficiency.  

  • Identify opportunities for scaling, clarity, consistency, and efficiency to improve the employee experience. Work collaboratively with various HR units such as Total Rewards, Employee Experience, and HR Technology to implement changes and improvements in business processes, standard operating practices, and procedures.  

  • Develop and launch new initiatives in collaboration with stakeholders to accomplish division strategic goals and objectives; provide oversight of programs pre- and post-launch and recommends consolidation and / or termination of programs, where appropriate. 

  • Develop communication and marketing methods to educate and enable employees to utilize human resources technology opportunities and resources best. 

  • Responsible for adopting project/change management principles through a common framework and methodology. 

  • Provide strategic direction to HR operations, employee relations, compliance, and policy functions, while remaining hands-on as a functional lead. 

  • Provide thought leadership and employee relations expertise to ensure a positive, ethical, and inclusive work environment and lead, advise and resolve investigations.  

  • Oversee and handle complex and sensitive workplace investigations in collaboration with HRBPs, the Director of Employee Relations and Compliance, the Office of General Counsel, and the Office of Risk and Compliance. Determine findings and recommendations for resolution. 

  • Appropriately assess risk when HR decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for higher education, higher education institutions, faculty, and staff by driving compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rules, adhering to Stevens policies, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting concerns with transparency. 

  • Responsible for tracking and ensuring all faculty and staff receive and complete mandatory training to ensure compliance and foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.  

  • Ensure and manage HR policies, programs, and practices to comply with federal and state laws. 

  • Serve as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator 

Education Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Business, Human Resources, Labor Relations, or a related field is required.  Master’s degree preferred.  

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience:  

  • At least ten (10) years of progressive HR experience with a minimum of five (5) years in a leadership role in the following areas: employee relations, HR Operations, and HR compliance. 

  • Ability to work effectively as a valuable partner and trusted advisor to all levels of management  

  • Excellent negotiation and mediation skills.  

  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building abilities at all levels of the organization, including at the most senior levels.  

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

  • Appropriate and comprehensive experience in organizational change management supporting large-scale process and HR projects.  

  • Proven time management and decision-making skills, with expert analytical and organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing timelines effectively and the ability to identify and respond to needs/issues quickly.  

  • Proven leadership experience in well-performing action-driven teams.  

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with and build a strong relationship with IT, Business Units, and other divisions outside of Human Resources.  

  • Ability to influence and lead with and without authority.  

  • Leadership facilitation experience to drive senior-level alignment for change.  

  • Reflects leading an environment where staff know the seriousness of the work while understanding the team can have fun simultaneously. 

  • Knowledge of Title IX, Title IV, Title VI, Title VII, EEOC, DOL rules and regulations, FLSA, and relevant rules and regulations regarding employee and labor relations.  

  • Strong knowledge and facility for interpreting and communicating employment laws and HR policy 

  • Strong investigative skills  

  • Extensive knowledge of Human Capital Management Systems. Workday HCM experience is strongly preferred. 

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and taking part in complex strategy discussions.  

  • Strong sense of collaboration, responsibility, accountability, and enthusiasm.
