Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers one of the most forward-looking educational environments in dental medicine in the country. Since its founding in 1868, TUSDM has been committed to leadership in education, patient care, research, and community service. Students obtain an interdisciplinary education, integrated with medicine, with access to training in dental specialties. Clinics managed at TUSDM provide quality comprehensive care to more than 20,000 individuals annually. Nationally and internationally, the school promotes health and educational programs and researches new procedures, materials, and technologies to improve oral health.


What You'll Do

Serves as the leader of the Student Affairs function and participates on the Dean’s senior leadership team. Responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of all non-academic services provided to the school’s applicants and students. Plays a direct role in attracting and selecting students to the school’s predoctoral program, determining registration and school-specific financial aid policies, and executing student life related events and activities including orientation, white coat ceremony, senior graduation dinner and graduation. Manages direct reports and provides direction through subordinate management staff.


What We're Looking For

Responsible for strategic leadership of critical student-focused departments, working in partnership with faculty and administrators. Serves as a leader within the school as a member of the Dean’s Senior Leadership Team and member or chair of a variety of committees. Builds collaborations among the services that report to the associate dean to ensure consistent values, coordinated services, and a high level of care for students. Engages collaboratively with faculty and administrative leaders to support the student experience and build a community conducive to success. Formulates and develops organizational consensus regarding the school’s student services policies. Works closely with committee chairs in formulating student academic policies, meeting with predoctoral class leadership and responding to individual student concerns.

Provides oversight to Enrollment Services (Financial Aid/Registrar) function. Provides information and guidance which supports compliance with federal aid policies. Advocates for changes in school policy in working with other university offices (Student Loan Office, Bursars Office, Controllers Office) and for increased aid support during annual school budget setting process.  Provides guidance and direction to financial aid staff to further enhance effectiveness in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with alumni and corporate donors that support the school’s students. Oversees and manages the execution of responsibilities in Student Records, advocating for revisions to school and university processes that improve the quality of the information available to the school and ensuring the accuracy of information reported to internal and external constituencies

Oversees the Admissions Office, managing staff who support the application process for predoctoral, advanced and graduate education and for foreign trained dentists seeking advanced standing in the D.M.D. program. Oversees electronic systems that support the application process; correspondence with applicants; communications with the school’s faculty who select candidates for postgraduate study, and all ongoing communications with individuals that select to matriculate prior to enrolling, including associated  communications from student life related organizational units. Provides an overview of the school’s program offerings during annual admissions interview sessions, ensuring that sessions are dynamic, engaging, directly responsive to student expectations and concerns, and appropriately authoritative. Cultivates meaningful collaborations between the school’s current students, applicants, and faculty to create a meaningful infrastructure that further embellishes the school’s ability to attract highly qualified applicants for predoctoral study.

Provides direct services to students, serving as the first line of contact in triaging students with personal and emotional problems, drawing on the resources of the Student Health office, and Campus Police (as needed). Works closely with other Health Sciences Student Affairs Deans and university counsel in refining ADA policy and related student policy, practices, and benefits. Provides academic and career counseling to predoctoral students, often in collaboration with other members of the school’s faculty and administration, through direct meetings and referrals and assists faculty and researchers with postgraduate student concerns that cannot be adjudicated utilizing existing resources and channels of communication.

Manages staff, guiding the performance and development of team through frequent advising and coaching. Interviews, hires and trains new staff. Uses the performance development program to provide regular performance feedback.

Asumes a leadership role in the execution of annual events such as orientation, advancement ceremony, commencement. Collaborates with Alumni Relations/Advancement team and many of the school’s faculty and administrative leaders.  Provides guidance in the development of student organizations and related facets of student life.

Maintains ongoing collaborations with the School’s Alumni Relations and Advancement division by stewarding current students as future alumni of the school. Develops active working relationships with current alumni in the counseling of referred prospective students and sustaining student-related affiliations (e.g., referrals for postgraduate study).

Minimum Required Experience, Education, Background, And Certifications/Licenses

·       Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of Master’s degree and 10 years of related experience

·       Strong management skills to create a strong team and optimize the effectiveness of the division

·       Superior communication and relationship building skills to work with students, student families, faculty and other staff are critical

 

Additional Preferred Experience, Education, etc. 

·       Experience with progressively responsible positions in a private health professions school admissions and student affairs setting
