Department Summary
As the chief communications organization for the University of North Texas, the Division of University Brand Strategy and Communications (UBSC) collaborates with internal and external partners to:

Advance and protect UNT’s institutional identity and reputation.
Reinforce and grow UNT’s brand in graphics, images and words.
Increase UNT’s visibility in public and in the higher education marketplace.
Support UNT’s student recruitment, retention and graduation goals.
Strengthen UNT’s relevance and value to key audiences, including alumni, donors, faculty and staff members, and encourage community engagement.

  • Ability to create, compose, edit video scripts and storyboards, and perform editorial research. * Advanced proficiency in Premiere/After Effects and Final Cut Pro. A proven advanced proficiency level with Photoshop and Illustrator is a strong plus. * Expertise and mastery of video production process, camera operation, different camera and lens types, microphones, proper filming techniques, lighting design, and post-production. * Experience covering live events. * Understanding of technical requirements for delivery of assets on various distribution channels.

Position Overview
This is administrative and professional work guiding a team of news promotion specialists (Communication Strategists) in the development and placement of stories about the university in the global, national and regional media markets; integrating news promotion efforts with UNT’s strategic plan, communication and branding goals; and participating on the crisis management response team. This position must make the best use of all media outlet opportunities when placing news stories about UNT – print (newspapers, magazines, trades, wires and others) and electronic (television, e-newsletters, writes, blogs, news web sites, social media sites and others), particularly maximizing news placement within higher education media and associations (the chronicle, Academic Impressions, UB Daily, ACE, AAUP, etc.) The employee in this class receives direct supervision from the Director of University Relations and Communications.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Strategic Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Photojournalism, Media Arts or related field and six years of professional experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of communications and marketing industry best practices (digital and print) and ability to apply that knowledge to make recommendations on potential communications and marketing strategies.
Extensive knowledge of communication tactics such as video, news media production, project management, etc.
Ability to conceptualize, wrote, edit and oversee the creation of strategic, accurate and concise content (digital and print) for internal and external university audiences.
Ability to oversee creative communications and marketing staff to implement communications and marketing strategies and create the supporting strategic content (digital and print) for the university’s internal and external audiences to best promote the university.
Knowledge of higher education trends with the ability to apply that knowledge to university goals and initiatives to make valid recommendations to UBSC leadership in order to move the university forward.
Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others.
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks, establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Superior critical thinking skills, including the capacity to identify and appropriately assess and order competing interests and priorities.
Good judgement, discretion, tact and the ability to work easily with senior leaders and to be trusted with sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: * Two to three years of professional writing experience, (i.e., at a newspaper or in a public relations office), college or university work experience preferred. * A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism or English. * Knowledge of a variety of public relations skills to develop and place stories in the global, national and regional news media markets, as well as having led the planning and execution of some public relations projects. * Ability to conceptualize, write and edit strategic, accurate and concise content for news releases, features, video, social media and other content wells as appropriate for various audiences. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Knowledge of story placement techniques for acquiring successful news media "scores". * Knowledge of writing guidelines for various media (print, online, broadcast, social).
