Since June 2020, the College has taken strategic and visible actions to advance equity, inclusion and racial justice efforts across the college and its constituencies, such as a Board of Trustee resolution that affirms its support for racial justice and inclusion, a $350K renovation of our Center for Inclusive Excellence, and campus-wide DEI Education. Gustavus is located on a scenic 340-acre hill in St. Peter, Minnesota one hour southwest of the Twin Cities and ten miles north of Mankato/North Mankato. Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing community of racial and ethnic diverse peoples, a community which increasingly and positively contributes to our student body and employee base.
The Vice President for Equity and Inclusion reports to the President and leads diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice strategy and alignment across the College, will chair the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (PCDEI), serve as the College’s ADA (Americans with Disability Act) officer, and manage a team of professionals in the Academic Support Center, the Center for Inclusive Excellence, and the Center for International and Cultural Education to advance our current efforts. This position is a full-time, 12-month, exempt (salaried) position.
Institutional Culture and Decision-Making
Advance a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging across all campus stakeholder groups, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Advocate for and center the perspectives and experiences of people in minoritized and underrepresented groups in institutional decision-making.
Provide diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and racial justice expertise to College planning processes, policies, practices, and procedures as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
Advise and work in partnership with the President, Trustees, Cabinet colleagues and other campus leaders to create vision and implement strategies to integrate equity and inclusion into the work of all academic departments and programs, campus offices, teams, and programs.
Collect, interpret, communicate, and use data about campus climate to inform decision-making processes and alignment of resources toward DEI and racial justice goals.
Identify bias and discrimination in College policies and practices and advise campus leaders on how to create equity and inclusion through implementing structural and procedural changes.
Build relationships and work with external experts, as needed, who can assist with the transformation of the College’s institutional culture, policies, and practices.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI), and Racial Justice Strategy and Leadership
Lead DEI strategic visioning and oversee implementation and communication of the College’s DEI and racial justice goals, plans, and activities to a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
Act as the College’s ADA officer, providing leadership to the Academic Support Center and other campus constituencies that engage with students, faculty, and staff in support of needs for accommodation in accordance with the Americans with Disability Act.
Promote efforts to deepen the college’s commitment to internationalizing the campus, supporting international students and scholars, and expanding access to study away, in collaboration with colleagues in the Center for International and Cultural Education.
Design and implement ongoing, campus-wide DEI and antiracism education for students, faculty, and staff by working with external experts, partnering with on-campus experts such as the Kendall Center Faculty Associate for DEI, and developing training and teaching capacity within the equity and inclusion team.
Partner with the Kendall Center for Engaged Learning, faculty, and academic departments in educational efforts to expand DEI and racial justice concepts and diverse perspectives/materials into academic courses and curricula.
Cultivate, grow, and strengthen the College’s DEI Ecosystem through:
o Supervision of 10-11 employees, including professionals in the Academic Support Center, the Center for Inclusive Excellence, and the Center for International and Cultural Education.
o Leveraging the physical spaces and programs of these centers to support students and provide equitable access to academic opportunities, experiential learning, and co-curricular activities.
o Management of the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (PCDEI); coordination and chairing of the Bias Response Team.
o Coordination with DEI-related campus groups, partners, events, and initiatives.
Steward an operating budget ($~30,000) for office management, professional development and programming, and the division-wide operating budgets (over $800,000).
External Relations and Capacity-Building
Work with Human Resources, the Provost’s Office, Admission, and Marketing and Communication teams to recruit, retain, and develop students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Build external partnerships and serve as an ambassador for the College within and beyond the region and higher education networks.
o Develop active and meaningful relationships and partnerships with DEI-related organizations in the region, including Greater St. Peter/Mankato.
Collaborate with the Advancement Office and Research and Sponsored Programs Office to raise additional funds through grants and donor-cultivated gifts that expand the impact and long-term sustainability of the College’s DEI infrastructure and initiatives.
Contribute to the elevation of Gustavus’s reputation as a place of inclusion and equity that lives up to and into its values.

A Bachelor’s degree.

Demonstrated application of knowledge and expertise in diversity, inclusion, equity, and racial justice toward education.
Ability to apply deep knowledge about past and current injustices and bias toward work with key stakeholders and partners.
Skill in navigating between grassroots activism and organizational structures and processes.
Ability to recognize and analyze power and privilege dynamics to advance the work necessary in complex organizational structures.
Knowledge of ADA regulations and processes (willing to provide training, if needed).
Experience in international education.
Expertise in asset-based community organizing skills.
Successful management of a team of professional-level staff.
Strong verbal and written communication and listening skills; specifically, the ability to organize and lead meetings effectively, give oral presentations, conduct focus groups, and construct written communications.
Demonstrated effectiveness in leading difficult conversations, collaborative negotiating, problem solving, and managing conflict at the individual and institutional level.
Proficiency in leading effective change in complex organizational systems.
Practice in leading strategic planning and assessment work at an organizational or institutional level.
Experience in grant-writing and fund-raising (willing to provide assistance and coaching, if needed).
Familiarity with the Intercultural Development Continuum, Intercultural Development Inventory, or other tools that educate toward intercultural growth (willing to provide training, if needed).
