The International Center provides immigration services and intercultural programming to approximately 1,500 international students on F and J visas and 300 international scholars and employees on J, H, TN, E, O, and other visas. International Center personnel are based at three different locations across Tufts’s campuses, and are authorized by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Department of State (DOS) to issue non-immigrant visa documentation. The staff works to ensure that students, faculty, and scholars maintain legal status while either studying or working at Tufts, and that all individuals have a productive, successful academic or work experience as members of the Tufts international community.
Under minimal supervision and based primarily at the International Center’s Boston Health Sciences campus office, the Associate Director provides counsel and guidance on complex visa matters and issues while managing a substantial immigration caseload primarily in H-1B visas. Serves as lead in managing immigration-related services involving Tufts School of Medicine and affiliated teaching hospitals. Applies extensive knowledge and experience to advise individual international scholars, faculty and staff on varied immigration classification proceedings. As subject matter expert, the Associate Director mentors and trains International Center staff on technical provisions and compliance requirements especially for H-1B, J, and other employment visas. Ensures international scholars and faculty are in compliance with immigration employment legal requirements. Provides leadership in ensuring consistency of employment-based policies, practices and customer service standards across the three international offices at Tufts.
The Associate Director follows federal immigration policy developments and assesses implications for University’s international community especially in relation to employment and hiring. Acts as liaison with external immigration firms to facilitate permanent residence sponsorship of eligible employees. Interacts with University offices such as University Counsel and Human Resources on complex federal regulatory compliance issues. The Associate Director may supervise some staff as needed and appropriate.
