Overview

The College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) now serves the Northeast region of Illinois as an Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The college recognizes the need to prepare students to meet the underserved rural and urban communities needs for health care providers who are attuned to their unique needs. As the director of this center, you will guide and support these efforts within CHHS and NIU to impact the people who live in our regional community. NIU recognizes that our community is enriched through the diverse lived experiences students, faculty, staff, and community members bring. The individual in this position will provide visionary, mission oriented and leadership to enable fulfillment of the essential functions of the College; to direct, supervise and guide staff, to recruit collaborators, and to generate and sustain supportive linkages for programs and services provided/implemented by CHHS.

Position Summary

To provide visionary, mission oriented and leadership to enable fulfillment of the essential functions of the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS); to direct, supervise and guide staff, to recruit collaborators, and to generate and sustain supportive linkages for programs and services provided/implemented by CHHS. Reports to the Dean or Dean’s designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for leading functions, programs, and services of the organization.
  • Serves as the organization’s primary liaison and external representative with multiple organizations, agencies and public officials including the University of Illinois College of Medicine –Rockford and Chicago, the federal Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) office, the National AHEC Organization, and local and state health and education organizations.
  • Researches, coordinates and supports preparation of proposals and grant applications for submission to public and private grant agencies and foundations and other organizations to provide funding for new and/or continuing operations and to enhance the agency’s mission.
  • Supports review of grant budgets, annual operating and monthly finance reports for Associate Dean of Research and Administration (or designee) approval, approves purchases and expenditures, and ensures that operations are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Monitors tracking and reporting of organizational outcomes through on going strategic planning and outcomes/related data collection.
  • Plans and develops public relations efforts to promote organization’ image and relations in coordination with the Marketing Director, supervising staff in the development, production, promotion and sale of the organization’s programs and services consistent with overall image.
  • Ensures that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all staff are defined and understood.
  • Provides procedures, systems, and direction necessary for staff to maintain proper records, compile required statistical and operating reports and to afford adequate accounting controls and services.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Responsible for collaboration, strategic planning, and program development with the Illinois AHEC Network Program.
  • Ensures that all organization activities and operations, within the scope of this position, are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. A total of three (3) years (36 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position*.
3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

Note: Master’s degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1 year) of work experience.

KNOWLEDGESKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

1. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
2. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
3. Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
4. Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.
5. Skill in oral and written communication.
6. Ability to adjust actions in relation to others’ actions.
7. Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
8. Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
9. Ability to develop specific goals, plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish tasks.

12. Ability to utilize various computer software packages, such as accounting software, query, etc.
13. Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in order to be able to analyze and investigate a variety of questions or problems.
14. Ability to analyze and develop guidelines, procedures, and systems.
