This position provides financial aid information and advising to prospective, current, and graduated law students; determines and adjusts students' financial aid packages that include grants, scholarships, fellowships, and loans. Advise current students and graduates about developing an effective student loan repayment plan.

The Associate Director, Financial Aid oversees aid processing and projects in collaboration with other departments, and administration of programs; anticipates student needs, facilitates and resolves financial aid delivery problems and administers private loan activity

The position reports to the Berkeley Law Director of Financial Aid.


  • Serves as primary point person for high volume of financial aid inquiries for over 1500 prospective and current students each year for multiple law school programs, including the LL.M. self-supporting degree programs.
  • Maintains standard of service for student advising, whether by phone, email, or in-person. Provides individualized counseling on available programs, applying for aid, payment issues, reducing debt burden and other financial literacy issues, as well as non-routine, sensitive aid issues
  • Analyzes financial data, family circumstances, and educational goals and applies knowledge of federal, state, University and outside agency laws, regulations and policies to determine students' eligibility for various types of aid including private and federal student loans as well as institutional grants, scholarships, and loans.
  • Advises current students and graduates about developing an effective student loan repayment strategy in light of federal loan repayment options
  • Reviews and processes professional judgment appeals while adhering to federal regulations in review of student requests to have financial aid awards adjusted or eligibility increased.
  • Reviews applications for continuing student scholarships and ensures fund terms are met as part of the scholarship selection committee
  • Responsible for the timely processing of aid for law students including private scholarships, bar loan applications, cost of attendance adjustment requests, and private loan certifications,
  • Analyzes reports and works with campus Financial Aid, Billing & Payment Services, Graduate Division and the law school's Business Services office to troubleshoot payment of financial aid and other systems issues.
  • Advocates on behalf of students to ensure fair, thorough, and timely processing. Recommends and implements decisions on administrative and operational issues affecting student's financial aid.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Financial Aid to maintain and continuously update the Berkeley Law Financial Aid website and all sub-pages with current information, such as procedural changes and important notifications.
  • Maintains the outside agency scholarship resources page by posting and advertising opportunities relevant to the law student population.
  • Helps develop content for email outreach campaigns.
  • Coordinates with other departments at Berkeley Law and UC Berkeley campus administrators to implement student focused activities, programs, and services.
  • Serves on Berkeley Law and campus Financial Aid Office committees and represents the department at meetings.
  • Works with the Admissions department to provide prospective and entering students with financial aid information through the Berkeley Law's website, handouts for events, and targeted email strategies.
  • Contributes to marketing and recruiting efforts to bring in an academically excellent and diverse group of students.
  • In collaboration with Director of Financial Aid, leads efforts with other departments and outside agencies to provide financial literacy resources applicable to law students including promoting workshops, webinars, and presentations.
  • Develops content for and leads regular presentations for admitted and current J.D. students regarding financing a legal education at Berkeley Law
  • Coordinates the day to day operations of student employees while overseeing quality of work and customer service
  • Trains student employees on basic advising and office functions; maintains procedure guides for such functions and recommends process improvements
  • Participates in staff development and trainings as assigned.
  • Proactively seeks out and attends webinars and training sessions relevant to the role.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience with student financial aid and billing systems
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently work at the highest professional level with students and staff in a student service oriented academic setting.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Specialized knowledge of policies, regulations, and practices for awarding financial aid.
  • Ability to acquire specialized knowledge of a variety of aid programs (e.g. programs for student loans, law school grants, scholarships, fellowships in addition to campus scholarships and federal work study).
  • Specialized knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Ability to interpret policies and develop procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Problem identification, critical thinking, and problem solving skills; professional judgment and decision-making ability.
  • Ability to calculate financial aid with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Analytical, planning, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Active listening skills.
  • Ability to assess processes and implement improvements.
  • Interpersonal skills to exercise tact, diplomacy and a professional demeanor.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, as well as internet and e-mail applications.
  • Experience navigating an integrated database such as a campus information system.

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to define specifications for database programming.
  • Working knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs, such as SIS Campus Solutions Financial Aid and Student Financials modules.
  • Working knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Ability to work with a diverse constituency of faculty and staff across all academic and administrative units and students from diverse ethnic underrepresented backgrounds as well as those who have been educationally or economically disadvantaged.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $64,000.00 - $70,000.00.
