Chair, Department of Health Services Policy and Management
The Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) seeks a dynamic, vision-driven Chair to lead the Department of Health Services Policy and Management (HSPM). Home to 17 full-time and 25 active adjunct teaching faculty, the department has a robust research portfolio spanning a wide spectrum of health services and policy research areas such as patient-centered care and outcomes, health services effectiveness, quality and access, and health care finance and cost effectiveness. The department’s research is largely directed towards reducing health disparities and improving care effectiveness, efficiency and impact. HSPM faculty generated $2.7M in extramural funding in 2020-21, including from federal sources such as NIH, HRSA and SAMHSA. The department has a rich tradition of excellence in education, and currently enrolls approximately 80 graduate students across its Master of Healthcare Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Science, and PhD degree programs.

UofSC is a comprehensive Carnegie University of High Research Activity and Community Engagement. Located in the capital city of Columbia, UofSC has five college engaged in health sciences and allied health research in addition to the ASPH: 1) School of Medicine in Columbia 2) School of Medicine in Greenville, 3) College of Nursing, 4) College of Pharmacy, and 5) College of Social Work. Founded in 1975, the ASPH is the second largest school of public health nationally among public universities in terms of overall enrollment. The ASPH consists of six departments and several research centers that address critical public topics such as disease prevention, health disparities reduction, care outcomes improvement, rural and minority health, and aging. Additional research opportunities are available through Health Sciences South Carolina, an innovative collaborative of the state’s research universities and major health systems. Departmental faculty have ongoing collaborative research projects throughout UofSC and with the PRISMA Health System, one of the largest health systems in South Carolina. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have evidence of strong leadership skills with a commitment to elevating the Department of HSPM’s research and academic initiatives into the future, including by facilitating faculty development through mentoring and advocacy, and building collaborations with intramural and extramural partners. The ASPH leadership is committed to providing the new Chair with the resources needed to enhance the department’s research and academic activities. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated evidence of scholarly achievement, an established record of acquiring extramural peer-reviewed research funding, and teaching excellence commensurate with the rank of tenured full professor. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in health services, policy, management, health administration, health economics, or related disciplines.
