American University of Sharjah (AUS) is seeking applicants for the position of Head of Department for the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The bachelor of degree offered by the department is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The master of science degree is offered with thesis and project options. AUS is licensed and its programs are accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Affairs Division in the United Arab Emirates. The department currently has 18 full-time faculty, 5 lab instructors, an administrative assistant, approximately 443 undergraduate students (BSME) and 34 graduate students (MSME). Strengths include a dedicated, energetic and collegial faculty, an engaged student body, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a highly supportive college and university administration. Students and faculty represent very diverse backgrounds and nationalities; more than 90 nationalities are present on campus. A major facilities expansion for the College of Engineering is underway that will approximately double the labs, classrooms, office and support functions of the college and department.
Recently, AUS established four research institutes and two supporting centers: the Materials Science and Engineering Research Institute (MSERI), Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI), Biosciences and Bioengineering Research Institute (BBRI) and Gulf Environments Research Institute (GERI), High Performance Computing Center (HPCC) and Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC). The expansion of the facilities coupled with the establishment of the research institutes and supporting centers include programmatic development of several interdisciplinary doctoral programs within the college and across the university. The successful candidate must hold earned degrees, including the doctorate, in mechanical engineering or a very closely related area. The candidate must be a full professor and demonstrate leadership in research, as evidenced by her/his outstanding publication records. In addition, demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and professional service is required. Preference will be given to candidates with an exceptional research record that is relevant to one or more of the research areas of AUS Research Institutes. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in the areas of aerospace engineering and/or 3D-printing. ABET accreditation experience, and experience in North American institutions and industry are added advantages.
The successful candidate must be a dynamic and innovative individual with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience within the context of the American education model. Strong communication skills to engage with a wide variety of constituents within and outside the university are necessary. The selected individual will have the opportunity to develop and articulate a vision and long-range plan for the department in research strategy that embodies the relevant areas of the established Research Institutes and also areas vital to the department and the region. Enhancing funding opportunities for research, outreach and graduate student support are important dimensions that the Head of Department will lead.
