Tufts Global Education serves as a hub of international programs and initiatives at the School of Arts & Science and School of Engineering. TGE oversees study abroad, international exchange programs, international learning collaborations, and faculty-led custom programs. We currently operate 11 of our own programs, Tufts Programs Abroad, in Chile, China, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, London, Madrid, Oxford, Paris, Pavia, and Tübingen. We facilitate student participation in approved partner programs throughout the world. TGE develops custom programs abroad during winter and summer sessions. About 40% of the junior class studies abroad for a semester or a full academic year. We host international exchange students and visiting scholars who attend Tufts for an academic term or custom program. The division works with faculty, students, and Tufts University on global engagement.


We are seeking an independent and experienced programmatic international education / study abroad leader to come in and hit the ground running. This position plays a critical role in the areas of Advising, Enrollment Management, Transfer of Credit, Student Outreach & Education, Program Assessment, Partnerships & Projects and Event Planning.

What You'll Do

This is a hybrid role. The expectation is that this role will be on campus four days a week during the academic year, with the possibility for additional flexibility depending on the academic needs of the department.


The Assistant Director oversees student participation in external study abroad programs within Tufts Global Education. This position plays a critical role in advising students who are preparing to go abroad, as well as managing transfer credits from study abroad programs to be applied towards degree requirements. They will be well-versed in the wide array of programs and partners. In addition, they will organize, coordinate and plan study abroad fairs/events with external program partners.


Responsibilities include:

  • Advises students who study abroad on affiliate programs (over 400 students per year)
  • Oversees student outreach, enrollment, pre-departure, and re-entry programs
  • Determines transfer of credit from non-Tufts programs, evaluates the quality of education, and assesses health and safety protocols of partner programs
  • Works closely with academic and student service departments, to ensure that academic and enrollment policies are in alignment with broader University goals and requirements
  • Spearheads student outreach and student education in consultation with stakeholders
  • Supervises another a staff member and student peer advisors, to create a robust and accessible advising environment
  • Builds close relationships with external partners and providers (this is essential)
  • Lead strategic planning and program assessment for all external study abroad opportunities and advises the Associate Dean on process and policy improvements
  • Supports marketing and promotion efforts to meet division and institutional goals
  • Provides recommendations on approved programs and develops strategic new partnership models with the Associate Dean

Basic Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

  • Master’s degree and 5+ years of experience in education abroad / global education
  • Experience in advising undergraduate students in a higher education setting is critical
  • Experience managing transfer of credits from academic programs and institutions
  • Demonstrated strengths in administration in the field of international education/study abroad required
  • Study abroad experience or significant travel and work abroad required
  • Proven ability to work effectively and cooperatively with college students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Excellent organizational skills; Proven attention to detail and strong follow through
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required
  • Ability to work effectively in intercultural situations and in dynamic, fast-paced atmosphere in which expectations are high
  • Must be able to handle multiple and complex responsibilities
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing student employees
  • Communication and outreach experience
  • Designing academic and student programs abroad
  • Demonstrated writing skills and ability to create detailed reports
  • Should be energetic, self-directed, flexible, extremely well-organized and hard working
  • Ability to analyze and summarize information and make appropriate recommendations for program revisions in the context of institutional and programmatic goals
  • Knowledge of other languages desirable
