Departmental Overview

As part of the College of Environmental Design, the Department's evolution has been nourished by social, cultural, and environmental values, reflected in our innovative teaching, scholarly research, critical design inquiry, and synthetic practice. Fifty years later, our founding principles remain a strong underpinning of our department, while supporting our continual exploration of emerging theory and knowledge in design thinking, innovative materials and technologies, digital design and fabrication, situated urbanism, and climate equity.

As the highest-ranking non-academic officer, this position manages the full general operations of the academic department, Architecture (CED). Member of the CED's Executive Team with Dean, Chairs, and Departmental Managers and other College leadership. Administrative services include activities in finance and human resources and include IT, facilities, or student services. General management includes long and short-range strategic planning in determining the mission and directing all activities of multi-disciplinary departments through subordinate management staff. Leads and manages all operations in support of the teaching programs in the department, and develops goals and plans for administrative, academic, instructional, and outreach programs. The manager is responsible for short- and long- range management of fiscal resources, academic program management, academic personnel, career, and part-time staff, and physical resources, including information and classroom technology. The manager supervises all department staff and oversees all administrative and service activities for the entire Architecture Department.

As the highest ranking administrative offer in the Department of Architecture, the Department Manager oversees a full spectrum of administrative funcitons including:

35% Budget Development & Fiscal Oversight

  • Manages, plans, administers, coordinates and oversees the entire range and all aspects of administrative and business operations for the Architecture department.
  • Administrative services such as Budgetary Development & Financial Management
  • Purchasing and Reimbursements
  • Contracts & Grants
  • Revenue Administration
  • Payroll & Benefits
  • Business operations of Students Services,
  • Physical resources such as equipment inventories
  • Space Management

35% HR/Academic Personnel Administration

  • Maintains the integrity and organization of the department through management supervision and oversight of staff, including hiring, assigning duties, managing workflow and reviewing work
  • Trains and directs staff, conducts performance evaluations and takes disciplinary action
  • Supervises professional, administrative staff including program assistant/course scheduler, events coordinator and two graduate student affairs officers
  • Manages academic hire processes (senate and non-senate)

10% General Operations

  • Makes decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures achievement of operation's objectives (operational and budget processes, academic and/or staff FTE, finance, human resources, IT and space planning) that have department-wide impact.
  • Performs strategic planning for all aspects of department.
  • Formulates policies and guidelines to carry out the department's mission for faculty and students.
  • Develops, modifies and executes campus policies which affect immediate operations.

10% Policy Development

  • Serves as key administrative officer for unit's functional programs, oversees analysis and policy development for issues and processes, including budget, financial and other administrative, business and academic functions, including DEIB efforts.

  • Interacts with higher-level management on controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other departmental, college or campus personnel.
  • Interacts with higher-level management on matters concerning several functional areas, and/or customers.
  • As a member of CEDs Executive Team of Deans, Chairs and Managers, manages, evaluates, and makes recommendations for college-wide planning in the areas of financial management, development activities, academic programs, academic and staff personnel, facilities, and information and classroom technology

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills, with strong organizational skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and independent judgment.
  • Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.
  • Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

The hiring salary range for this position will be $100,000-$112,000, commensurate with experience.
