VPAA ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Bushnell University’s Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) is the highest level academic leader at our Christian institution. The VPAA’s role is not only critical to the effectiveness of our Academic Programs, Faculty, and Students, but also to overall University Administration and Spiritual Leadership.

The VPAA role includes the following key responsibilities for Bushnell University:

Administration Leadership: The Vice President for Academic Affairs, as the institution’s Chief Academic Officer, reports to the President and is a member of the President’s Cabinet. In that role, the VPAA not only represents the Academic Department but also provides leadership in the management decisions of the institution, ranging from enrollment, facilities, finances, internal and external relations, and strategic planning.

Academic Leadership: The Vice President for Academic Affairs, as the institution’s Chief Academic Officer and Dean of the Faculty, is responsible for all academic matters relating to the development, implementation, and review and evaluation of the curriculum; recruitment, hiring, development, and evaluation of the faculty; the library and all academic support functions; and the Registrar’s Office. The VPAA leads the academic efforts toward institutional effectiveness and works with the President and the Cabinet in implementing the institution’s strategic plan.

Spiritual Leadership: The Vice President for Academic Affairs provides spiritual leadership through the knowledge and application of the theological underpinnings of our institution. This position not only serves to guide the Faculty and Students in their spiritual formation but also in leading the institution in reflecting is Christian heritage and purpose.

The ideal candidate for the VPAA role would possess a range of academic, leadership, and management experiences and credentials including but not limited to:

Academic Credentials: Earned doctorate in an academic discipline represented in the Bushnell curriculum; record of strong academic leadership as well as a record of excellence in teaching and of scholarly research and publication; evidence of understanding a broad range of disciplines and the ability to work with faculty from those diverse disciplines

Leadership & Management Experience: Proven track record of personnel and organizational management skills, including the abilities to supervise, mentor, and solve conflicts; excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with good judgment critical to the position; ability to manage budgets essential. Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are paramount for this position.

Strategic Thinker: A proven Administrator who also can develop and cast a vision for academic programs and in conjunction with strategic thinking and planning for the future of the institution.

Theological Knowledge: Theological education, training, and experience to help guide the Academic Department and University in spiritual study and formation. Theological background and experience with the Stone-Campbell/Restoration movement.
