The Department of Economics is rated one of the top academic and research programs in the country and globally. It is one of the largest teaching departments within the College of Letters and Science with over 1,430 undergraduate majors, 140 graduate students, and annual enrollments of over 10,000 students. The Department includes over 12 career staff and 40 regular faculty, including a total active academic membership of approximately 70, including joint appointments, lecturers, visiting faculty and active emeritus faculty representing most of the major academic fields and current research. The Department works collaboratively with numerous departments and Organized Research Units within the Department and on-campus.
The Undergraduate Advisor (UA) is responsible for providing a wide range of student services duties in support of programs in Economics. The UA is a member of an advising team that administers several aspects of the department's undergraduate program with a high level of independence and autonomy. This position is responsible for advising a cohort of undergraduates and provides a high level of administrative and policy analysis on a range of issues relevant to the major. This position also advises the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Student Services, Undergraduate Committee, Undergraduate Chair and the Director of Student Services on administration of the program and interpretation and implementation of university and department policies, as well as on the formulation of department policy.
Undergraduate Academic Advising:
- Applying professional Student Services concepts provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
- In conjunction with the undergraduate advising team, advises faculty on departmental and university policies and procedures;
- Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion;
- Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair, faculty, and with other departments.
- Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
- Leads department efforts in supporting undergraduate student wellness and community building, with a specific focus on mental health, diversity, and inclusion. Initiatives may include, but not limited to: event planning, marketing campaigns, and resource development.
- Serves as the liaison/advisor for department student groups: Berkeley Economic Review (BER), Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), Students of Color in Economics (SoCE), Undergraduate Economics Association (UEA) and Undergraduate Women in Economics at Berkeley (UWEB).
Recruitment and Admissions:
- Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility;
- Initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley.
- Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as commencements and Cal Day. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the major or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
- Participates in summer freshmen and transfer orientations (Golden Bear Orientation and Golden Bear Advising).
- Maintain professional development and update working knowledge of student affairs administration and national student advising issues through attendance and participation at campus and other training sessions, seminars, conferences, and events and active membership in campus and professional organizations, and networking with peers.
- The Department of Economics provides $1,500 per year toward professional development activities.

Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience up to $75,000.00.
