The National English Honor Society (NEHS), for secondary students and faculty, is an outreach program of Sigma Tau Delta (ΣΤΔ), International English Honor Society (serving students at four-year colleges/universities). Both societies have their Central Offices associated withNIU’s Department of English, and are registered not-for-profit 501©3 organizations. NEHS currently has over 1,000 chapters.As its administrative leader, the NEHS Director reports directly to the ΣΤΔ Executive Director, and is responsible for independently applying specialized knowledge to develop, improve, and maintain NEHS’s national and international operations in the areas of chapter development, information dissemination, public relations, budget development, and marketing.The individual in this position provides vision and central supervision of NEHS and is responsible for NEHS expansion in secondary schools throughout the country and abroad. They must work credibly, collaboratively, and as a peer with a wide range of constituencies, including secondary-school senior administrators and teachers, university faculty and staff, and thousands of students. They provide creative and innovative oversight of the Society and of support staff who assist with Society operations.The NEHS Director has high-level responsibilities in selecting, planning for, and mentoring of the Society’s governing body (the NEHS Advisory Council, comprised of secondary school teachers), and also serves as a non-voting member on the ΣΤΔ Board of Directors.
