Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures (4342)

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director Outdoor Adventures for the Recreation Center. This is a full-time,12-month position with benefits.
This position will provide leadership, direction, and oversight of a comprehensive Outdoor Adventure program including trips, special events, rentals, and custom trips and teambuilding. The position will have oversight of the Adventure Center and all equipment associated with the program. The Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures will oversee recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff for this program. This full-time position reports to the Associate Director of External Affairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement all activities associated with Outdoor Adventures.
- Oversee reservations and other associated purchases for programs.
- Oversee the utilization and management of software including but not limited to information systems, scheduling, registration systems, and applications
- Recruit, select, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate staff and interns and all other student personnel needed for the implementation and management of programs.
- Coordinate payroll for all student employee positions
- Assist with program marketing initiatives to recruit and retain active participation in programs and rentals to include developing and implementing promotions, publications, and marketing strategies that encourage and invite participation. This may include development and management of brochures, schedules, fliers, websites, and social media
- Coordinate daily equipment management including maintenance and equipment inventory of equipment including, but is not limited to, bikes, skis, boats, and camping gear.
- Assist in facilitating custodial and facility work requests for the Adventure Center.
- Assist in the development and ensure the implementation of a risk management and emergency response plan for programs
Safety and conduct
- Lead groups of all sizes with diverse ages, abilities, needs and wants. Individualizes activities using sound judgement and effectively manages risk.
- Responsible for the health and safety of participants.
- Represent NIU Athletics and Recreation and Wellness in a positive manner; provides general recreation information and answers inquiries as needed; receives and resolves guest concerns and complaints; collects and deposits program fees.
- Serve as an integral member of Recreation by actively participating and contributing in staff meetings, training, and development activities.
- Provide assistance with special events and other tasks assigned by the Associate Director of External Affairs and/or the Assistant Athletic Director of Recreation
Budget and reporting
- Oversee the development of participant and student employee programs and assessments that demonstrate evidence of learning.
- Assist in the preparation of semester and annual reports demonstrating evidence of program accomplishments and learning outcomes.
- Maintain required records and reports to measure programming effectiveness.
- Manage all administrative duties such as reservations, email, and correspondence.
- Complete other administrative tasks as assigned.
- Oversee budget for the program.
- Oversee the handling of funds such as cash register operations, reconciliation, daily deposits, and working funds.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
- Bachelor’s degree.
- One (1) year Outdoor Adventure program experience within a university setting.
- One (1) year supervisory experience.
- One (1) year of budget planning/fiscal management experience.
*Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1 year) of work experience.

Position-Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Currently active in one or more of the following professional organizations: AORE, AEE, NIRSA.
- An understanding of student development theory, behavior change theory, environmental planning theory and demonstrated success in the implementation of programs to a culturally diverse population.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic and diverse environment by being able to manage change and work with diverse internal and external constituents.
- Ability to obtain a valid Illinois Driver’s License and meet university driving standards.

Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)
- A Master’s Degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Physical Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or closely related field).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in administering Outdoor Adventure programs, preferably within a university setting, to include risk management practices, emergency response, and inventory control, and outdoor adventure rental or retail operations.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in recruiting, training, and evaluating staff, including teambuilding and goal setting development activities.
- Organization and problem-solving skills; ability to effectively prioritize work; manage multiple tasks simultaneously; work independently; and demonstrate sound judgement.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate with constituents and campus community.
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and American CPR/AED/BBP and First Aid basic certifications; Obtain and maintain current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification within six months of employment.
