Departmental Overview

The School of Information is a graduate research and education community committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our multi-disciplinary faculty conduct research in the development of user-friendly interfaces, new approaches to security and privacy, and exploration of the role of technology in developing regions.

We offer three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our MIMS program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our MIDS and MICS programs are online degrees designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of Data Science and Cybersecurity, respectively. Our Ph.D. program equips scholars to develop solutions and shape policies that influence how people seek, use, and share information.

The Senior Director of Student Services will take the lead role in overseeing student services for all I School students in our four graduate programs: making policy recommendations to the Senior Assistant Dean/CAO; providing faculty and Assistant Dean for Academic Planning with resources and support on curriculum planning matters; overseeing all student advising and support through management of a team of five student services professionals (two direct reports; three indirect reports); engaging with the Admissions team on recruitment efforts; and handling complex student enrollment and financial aid matters, in concert with the Registrar, Graduate Division, and Financial Aid offices. The Senior Director will supervise the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds; oversee student orientation and immersion events; and serve as a general student advocate in all matters.


50% Program Management:
  • Develops, interprets, and administers student services programs through a team of five student services professionals (two direct, three indirect reports) as well as a team of external student success advisors for our online degree programs (indirect reports).
  • Provides direction to professional student services advisors on the more complex issues encountered.
  • Plans, develops, and administers the student services budget for the organization.
  • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Recognizes issues that have campus impact or future implications and advises the managed employees accordingly.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the student services function, and makes changes to the program to provide better service to organizational management, faculty, and students.
  • Represents the student services unit to the campus community and relevant external constituencies.
  • Decides which resources will be committed to goals and objectives and how they will be allocated.

Manages and maintains excellent working relationship with external technology partner for the school's online degree programs, including strategy development and operational issues.

30% Policy Recommendations:
  • In close collaboration with the faculty Degree Program Committees and Academic Directors, conceptualizes, develops, implements, and manages student support services that promote students' academic success. Assesses student needs, and plans appropriate responses.
  • Serves on faculty Degree Program Committees, providing recommendations to help set pedagogical goals and curricular plan for each year
  • Advises faculty on I School, Graduate Division, and University policies, procedures, and requirements for degree/program completion.
  • Serves as point person for faculty seeking guidance on difficult or uncommon situations.
  • Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.

20% Academic Advising:
  • Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides a full range of student services to graduate students in the MIMS, MIDS, MICS and PhD programs at the School of Information.

  • Assesses problems that arise affecting students, investigates alternatives, and utilizes creativity and expert understanding of student matters to devise and implement solutions.
  • Counsels students in crisis and students in violation of the campus code of conduct.
  • Reviews student performance and delivers advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress, requirements for program completion, and course selection and sequencing.
  • Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in building graduate student support services that assist faculty in attracting, retaining and developing an exceptional, outstanding, diverse, inclusive graduate student population.
  • Advanced knowledge of and at least three years' experience in managing online degree programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing new processes in a higher education environment, preferably in the student services arena.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
  • Ability to effectively and persuasively represent the School of Information.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • Four or more years' experience leading a student services team as well as managing degree program(s) in an online environment (undergraduate or graduate).

  • The salary range designated for this position: $75,400 - $110,800; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
