Description

The FIRST Resource Center was founded in September 2018 to create a community of support and to develop a network of resources for Tufts university’s first generation, low-income, and undocumented populations. FIRST welcomes any student who self identifies with the first-generation college student experience. By strengthening the bonds between our community members and bridging the gap between Tufts’ resources and first-generation students, FIRST aims to ensure that students are empowered in, and prepared to reach their full social, professional, and academic potentials.

The FIRST Center works to provide the necessary financial knowledge, information about Tufts, and access to opportunities and resources for students to be successful during their time at the university. The FIRST Center believes it is imperative that First-gen students are provided an inclusive space that is sensitive to their intersecting identities and where their shared experiences can be validated. The FIRST center celebrates the First-gen identity and passionately advocates for the trailblazers among us who are the first in their families to attend an elite, private institution like Tufts. The FIRST Center is within the division for Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion and works closely with the other identity based cultural centers to holistically support students, staff, and faculty.

The Associate Director develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates quality programs on issues related to multiple intersecting identities (i.e., gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, citizenship/nationality). In addition, this position writes grants and seeks funding sources for center programs and initiatives. The Associate Director works closely with student-facing resources and departments including other identity-based resources, residential life and learning, the CARE office, faculty, and the departments within and beyond the division. The Associate Director also works closely with Center Director to complete all projects and programs connected to the FIRST Resource Center.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

Bachelor’s degree; superb judgment, demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial and oral and written communication skills;
5 years relevant experience supporting student growth and development within an educational setting, preferably within a selective university or liberal arts college environment;
Awareness of how social identities will impact the experience of college students; strong background in understanding issues impacting the experience of students historically underrepresented at Tufts, including students of color, first-generation and undocumented students; and an awareness of various models for identity-based resource centers.
Demonstrated sensitivity, imagination, and effectiveness in developing educational and community programs; facility in designing programs and resources that consider cultural constructions of race as it intersects with gender, class, ethnicity, sexual identity, religion, and ability.
Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred with 3+ years related experience.
