Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) helps build Berkeley's excellence through communications, public outreach, and fundraising, all to raise public awareness about Berkeley and increase private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and strengthens campus unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. It handles a range of central activities and services encompassing prospect development, communications, donor stewardship, gift management, data management, and more

The Student Experience & Diversity Fundraising (SED) program within the division of University Development and Alumni Relations leads fundraising to support the success of Berkeley students and the advancement of educational equity. As the lead philanthropic unit on behalf of the divisions of Equity and Inclusion, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Education, the SED student focused fundraising priorities include financial aid/scholarships, co-curricular support, and diversity, equity and inclusion. The SED program interfaces with a broad range of campus division and encompasses major gift fundraising from individuals and foundations as well as direct response marketing.

Position Overview

The Associate Director of Development, SED is a Northern California-based position with the ability to travel frequently to campus as needed. This position will be a self-driven leader with a high degree of knowledge in the field of fundraising and recognized expertise in scholarship administration and student success. Using advanced fundraising concepts, they will plan, organize, and direct complex large-scale fundraising campaigns with multiple stakeholders. Results have a major impact on scholarships and student equity and success programs. This position includes managing a portfolio of donors capable of giving gifts $100,000+. May oversee a student worker. May lead the planning of functions, meetings and serve on internal / external committees as a scholarship and student success representative. The position is expected to raise $1M+ as established by the maturity of portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and directs large-scale, fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. Will serve as an expert and lead development professional for undergraduate scholarships and student success services.
  • Analyzes needs and assists in the execution of the strategic plan for scholarship fundraising and other advancement programs.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and implements program activities to achieve these goals.
  • Develops and manages a dynamic portfolio of 100+ to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects for gifts in the agreed upon range. May include corporate and foundation prospects.
  • May lead the development of functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a representative.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Advanced working knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare generally. Advanced working knowledge of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies, along with strong customer service skills, and guiding project managers to reasonable expectations to meet fundraising goals.
  • Advanced working knowledge of scholarship fundraising, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education generally.
  • Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.

Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience or training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is up to $135,000, commensurate with experience.

  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position, eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 70% remote capability. This is a Northern California based position.
