The Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives (ADSI) primary role is to provide vision, leadership, development, implementation and oversight to advance the strategic program priorities for the School of Nursing
’s academic, research, and practice/service missions in light of new and evolving health care challenges. The ADSI will coordinate these activities across academic programs (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral), community partners and the newly developing faculty practice plan with the communities of interest to successfully implement these strategic initiatives to achieve successful outcomes.
The School of Nursing (SON) is seeking a visionary leader who can inspire faculty, is a strategic thinker and can lead strategic planning for the School of Nursing, engages with leadership and faculty across the University at Buffalo and the Greater Buffalo Community as the School positions itself for continued growth and expansion across our educational programs, research intensiveness, and practice/service missions.

The ADSI is a member of the Executive Leadership Team (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA), Associate Dean for Research (ADR), and Sr. Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance (ADAF)) and reports directly to the Dean of the School of Nursing. The ADSI develops and implements new strategic priorities of the School of Nursing across the academic, research, and practice/service mission and at times will work with leaders across the University at Buffalo, advancement team members, marketing and communications, New York State Education Department (NYSED), NYS Office of Professions, Erie County Department of Health and other organizational entities to grow and expand educational programs, engage with the community to assess and monitor workforce needs, identify new educational programs for development, work to build partnerships with the community to support the development and implementation of a faculty practice plan, and support activities of the School of Nursing with the community.
Grow and Expand Academic Programs
Provides overall strategic leadership to implement the strategic vision as the School of Nursing seeks to assess workforce needs and then develop, plan and implement strategies to grow undergraduate and graduate programs across the undergraduate (BS, ABS, RN-BS) and graduate programs (DNP and PhD) to ensure academic excellence and compliance of all programs with applicable accreditation and licensing requirements consistent with an R1 AAU research intensive university.
Collaborates with Associate/Assistant Deans and Chairs in the School of Nursing and Academic leaders across the university regarding development of new academic programs, development of curriculum for submission for university, SUNY, and NYSED approvals prior to implementation, works with the Dean and Leadership Team to maximize operational efficiency, and develop innovative academic programming.
Explores and assesses the development of innovative new programs in response to identified community, regional, state and national needs.
Manages resources wisely to ensure efficiency and fiscal responsibility while maximizing opportunities with other academic partners for innovation and expansion such as a hybrid, program innovation with the School of Management [MBA] or School of Public Health [MPH]) or to establish nursing continuing professional development.
Interfaces with accreditation, licensing, site visits, self-studies, and other required documents agencies and activities as needed to grow and expand programs and meet, implement, and maintain SUNY, COA, CCNE, AACN and NY State Office of Professions standards/requirements.
Provides guidance and consultation with individuals in Communications and Marketing, Alumni Affairs and Office of Student Affairs to innovate new ways to promote programs and to expand academic programs.
Works with Advancement to identify and secure resources to support innovative academic programs, expand resources for community engagement, and support implementation of a faculty practice plan.
Foster and promote an environment where all members of the School of Nursing have a sense of belonging and are supported to succeed and advance in rank across the clinical and tenured/tenure track faculty.
Provides guidance and consultation, as needed to develops, modify, and maintain school and academic policies as needed to support educational objectives, achieve accreditation standards, and comply with licensing requirements as new programs are developed, planned and implemented.
Meet with other ADAA and serve on the Associate Deans Councils across decanal units to advance the outcomes and innovate new programs, develop university wide policies, and share/disseminate information with members of the SON as appropriate.
Engages with the Vice Provosts and Deans of the Graduate and Undergraduate Schools regarding curriculum, students, enrollment, faculty, and student issues as needed to achieve program outcomes.
Expand Practice and Community Strategic Partnerships
Provides strategic leadership to maintain, engage, identify, coordinate, develop and expand community partnerships in concert with plans to expand and grow academic programs.
Surveys and identifies opportunities, resources, physical facilities, professional requirements (licensing, credentialing, and etc.) as identified by consulting experts to implement a faculty practice plan.
Evaluate and Assess Measures of Success
Develops, monitors, evaluates, and manages implementation of the Strategic Plan across the leadership team to judge success of the School of Nursing across programs to continue to elevate the reputational excellence, research intensity, and contributions to the community to support the Top 25 aspirations of the School of Nursing at the University at Buffalo.
Provides leadership to evaluate and assess overall success in academic, research and practice/community programs across the School of Nursing to determine if strategy needs to be modified or changed to achieve programmatic success.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean.

School of Nursing
The UB School of Nursing was founded in 1936 following the release of the 1923 Goldmark Report funded by the Rockefeller Foundation that advocated for university education for nurses and national accreditation procedures.
