Job Details:

Mercer University seeks an outstanding individual to become the next Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer for the College and reports directly to the Provost. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Located on the 130-acre campus in Macon, Georgia, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the growing, dynamic, and diverse cornerstone of the University’s undergraduate presence as well as its oldest and largest academic division. With a deep commitment to liberal education, over 130 full time faculty members offer nearly 40 academic programs in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Additionally, the faculty provide the general education of the 3,400 traditional students enrolled in the College and in the other four Macon traditional undergraduate schools (business, education, engineering, and music).

The College upholds Mercer’s fundamental commitments to academic excellence and service. In the past five years, Mercer students have earned twelve Goldwater Scholarships, twenty Fulbright Scholarships, eleven NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, seven Critical Language Scholarships, and dozens of other nationally-competitive fellowships and scholarships. Mercer is the nation’s top producer of Gilman Scholars among schools with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates. Mercer is also one of only three Georgia universities that both shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and hold membership in the Georgia Research Alliance. With respect to service, the University has aided the revitalization of local historic neighborhoods, funded rural health clinics throughout the state, and deployed faculty and students to 45 international locales via its global service program, Mercer On Mission. Mercer University affirms the practical, world-changing benefit of the liberal arts and sciences alongside the traditional benefit of self-development.

With 9,100 students enrolled in twelve colleges and with campuses in Macon, Atlanta, Savannah and Columbus, Mercer has an extensive and robust footprint in Georgia. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is located 80 miles south of Atlanta in Macon (pop. 150,000), a beautiful metropolitan area enjoying an internationally recognized renaissance. Macon boasts historic architecture, a revitalized downtown, a vibrant arts and music scene, a demographically diverse community, and the United States' next national park.

The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides leadership both for the faculty within the college and among the administration of the wider University. As head of the Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty, the Dean presides over College faculty meetings, works with an elected Executive Committee to set goals and directions for the College, and coordinates with departmental chairs to implement the College’s curriculum and programs. The Dean also prepares and administers operating budgets within the College, reviews the development of tenured and untenured faculty members, and has responsibility for most College personnel issues involving faculty members and staff. Finally, the Dean represents the College in Deans’ Council meetings, serves as liaison to the Provost’s Office, and works with a variety of other offices within the University (e.g., Advancement and Enrollment Management) in order to advance Mercer’s mission. Two Associate Deans assist with the day-to-day administration of the College’s business.

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in a liberal arts and sciences discipline from an accredited university or college and a distinguished record appropriate for appointment as a tenured professor

  • Administrative and technological skills necessary to oversee the work of the College, including strategic planning, budgeting, and resource management
