The Assistant Director for Multicultural Education and Student Success in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) is primarily responsible for the coordination, implementation, and assessment of inclusion-related learning experiences for the campus community, with primary emphasis on initiatives related to the recruitment, retention, and success of underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students. This position oversees all aspects of the Connections Pre-Orientation Program, Graduate Student Connections Program, and First-Generation Success Program at WPI. This position also plays a key leadership role other ODIME success programs including the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Scholar Program, support and mentoring groups, and professional success groups. This position will also assist with bringing together students, faculty, and staff to develop, promote, and facilitate the WPI affinity month celebrations. This position will work collaboratively with the Director and the ODIME team to advance the mission of the ODIME to foster an inclusive campus community which respects, honors, and celebrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in all its dimensions. This mission is consistent with WPI's strategic plan by creating a culture of inclusion, belonging, well-being, and respect that draws diverse minds and provides the support necessary for all to thrive. The Assistant Director for Multicultural Education and Student Success is a staff member in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) and reports directly to the Director of Multicultural Education and Community Engagement.



  • The Assistant Director assists with the administration of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) and is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and support services specifically for underrepresented students included but not limited to students who are underrepresented BIPOC/ALANA, first-generation college, low-income, LBGTQIAP+, women, international students, and students from a variety of religious backgrounds, and for all undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Lead and oversee all aspects in the planning, coordination, execution, and assessment of the Connections Pre-Orientation Program designed to assist incoming first-year students who are underrepresented in STEM/WPI and identify as BIPOC/ALANA, LGBTQIAP+, and/or first generation college students, make a smooth transition from high school to college. This includes leading the planning and implementing of Program Ambassador (PA) training and development, the week plus Connections Pre-Orientation experience, summer academic immersion experience, hands-on academic year support for students who successfully completed the Pre-Orientation Program, and supervising PAs.
  • Lead and oversee all aspects in the planning, coordination, execution, and assessment of the Grad Connections program designed to assist in providing a foundation of success for incoming graduate students who are first-generation, international, and/or BIPOC/ALANA.
  • Lead and oversee all aspects of WPI's First Generation Success Program including working with campus partners and other stakeholders supporting the success of WPI's growing first-generation student population
  • Assist in leading and supporting ODIME support networks and mentoring groups in collaboration with the Division of Talent and Inclusion and campus partners.
  • Serve as the liaison between the ODIME and Graduate Studies. This position shall work with Graduate Studies, Graduate Admissions, the Office of International Student Life (ISL), Graduate Student Government (GSG), and other campus partners to develop new programs and services to support underrepresented graduate student populations.
  • Serve as the liaison between the ODIME and the Office of Lifetime Engagement. This position shall work with WPI alumni affinity groups and networks to offer support, connection, advocacy, and community with current undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Provide strategic vision and continual support of educational opportunities and other learning experiences which addresses issues of concern to students from diverse background in STEM and helps to raise awareness of issues impacting underrepresented students in STEM, such as lectures, workshops, and professional development seminars for both graduate and undergraduate students.
  • This position will be required to develop, coordinate, implement, and assess programming and other learning experiences throughout the academic year and summer months which can address a wide variety of audiences focused on spreading awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, access, and social justice topics.
  • Assist in leading campus and community implementation and coordination of campus-wide events, programs, and services in celebration of all ethnic/racial affinity heritage months, religious holidays, awareness days, and commemorative days.
  • In consultation with the Director of Multicultural Education and Community Engagement, the Assistant Director shall participate in campus ceremonies and celebrations including, but not limited to: New Student Orientation, Convocation, Homecoming, Martin Luther King Jr. Observation, and Commencement exercises.
  • Assist in leading campus and community efforts around civic engagement, voter education, and voter registration for all students.
  • Support the Director's efforts tied to the ALANA Support Network.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other campus offices and departments to ensure high quality services for students.
  • Serves as a staff liaison or an advisor to student organizations supporting underrepresented students and will provide significant support and leadership. Those groups include but are not limited to: National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society for Hispanic and Professional Engineers (SHPE), Black Student Union (BSU), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the Alliance, oSTEM Affiliate Chapter, the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE), the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and groups associated with clubs/organizations serving the alumni population.
  • Assist with the coordination and some logistical components and chaperones travel to assigned national and local student leadership conferences.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees that advocate for diverse populations to foster an inclusive campus community.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising of undergraduate student staff and graduate assistants as needed, including providing specific supervision the variety of student workers within the department.
  • Under the leadership of the Director, and in coordination with campus wide assessment teams, conduct regular program assessments to determine the effectiveness of programs and align the learning outcomes with student needs.
  • In collaboration with the Director, develop and disseminate annual report reviewing key initiatives, effectiveness, recommendations, and future objectives as they relate to the support of diverse student populations at WPI.
  • Maintain and update departmental databases and share drives.
  • Maintain and update the office's various houses, identity centers, and spaces to ensure proper cleanliness, health, and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree from an accreditation program in STEM, higher education, cultural studies, leadership, business, social sciences, or related field. Master's degree in related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2+ years' experience in higher education and experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion work for diverse student populations.
  • Experience in developing and delivering education programing for diverse students in higher education.
  • Experience working with students in STEM disciplines highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with recruitment and retention of diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the development of collaborative programming at an institution of higher education.
  • Record of success in establishing good working relationships with students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, families, and other stakeholders is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated record of involvement and leadership in professional organizations, especially within higher education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication required.
  • Strong organizational skills.

The salary range is: $52,000 - $58,000
