Involves advising on intellectual property (IP) rights protection, business startup and other technology transfer related issues. Evaluates the commercial potential of research results, obtains and manages the appropriate IP rights protection, markets inventions and software, and / or biological / tangible materials; drafts and negotiates, and manages IP licenses and Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and advises on IP terms in research and collaboration agreements. Supports companies who wish to sponsor research and / or license technologies. Facilitates administration of federal and state laws regarding research, conflict of interest, IP, contracts and employment. Works with outside patent attorneys to file patent applications.
Using intellectual property concepts, applies organization policies and procedures to resolve a variety of intellectual property issues. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Works under direction of higher-level officer where some interpretation of established work policies and procedures is required, and, at times deviation from standard work practices may be needed.
The position is in the Office of Intellectual Property Management in the Industry Alliances and Technology Commercialization Group in the UC Santa Cruz Office of Research. The UC Santa Cruz Office of Research supports, fosters, and champions world-class research and academic excellence. The mission of IATC is to build a vibrant, entrepreneurial culture to accelerate the adoption of UC Santa Cruz inventions, cultivate sustainable strategic partnerships, and enable our campus to be an innovation powerhouse delivering social and economic benefits to our local and global communities. The Office of IP Management seeks out and protects, manages patent prosecution of, and provides an overall intellectual property strategy for university owned inventions at UC Santa Cruz.
