Primary Function
Reporting to the provost, the dean is the intellectual and administrative leader of the college. The dean is the chief advocate for the mission and purpose of liberal arts education, both internally and within the state of Illinois, helping define it in a manner that sets NIU apart from other institutions in the state and region. The dean provides leadership in formulating and implementing a vision for the college, within the framework of the goals and mission of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
The duties of the dean include oversight on:

  • Curriculum and academic program development
  • Faculty and staff hiring, tenure and promotion
  • The college budget
  • Resource generation for the college, including fund-raising and development efforts, revenue-generating programs, grants and contracts.
  • Advocacy for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as a unit, and values of the liberal arts, both within the university and without
  • Selection and supervision of the college leadership, including chairs & directors of units and the college office staff
  • Development and implementation of policies and procedures that help assist the college faculty and staff in fulfilling the college’s mission

Each of these responsibilities is discharged through liaison as appropriate with university offices and shared governance entities.

The CLAS dean is also a member of the Council of Deans, and as such, provides support and advice to the provost on the mission of the Division of Academic Affairs and the university. Similarly, the dean is also a member of University Council, and as such is a direct participant in the university’s shared governance system. The dean may also be called upon to serve in other capacities across the university.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
The candidate must have an earned doctorate with scholarly accomplishments commensurate with the rank of full professor, demonstrated achievements in academic administration and resource development and a strong commitment to diversity.

Education and Experience Preferred
Knowledge of enrollment management and planning in a state-funded environment would be advantageous.
