Working within the Office of the Dean of Students and under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Students this position exists to coordinate the campus' response to students experiencing varying degrees of distress. The Center for Support & Intervention is a unit that provides institutional responses to care for students and the overall Cal community. This position will serve as a Case Manager, interfacing with a variety of campus partners including members of the Students of Concern Committee (Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Residential Life, Center for Student Conduct, Financial Aid, UC Police Department (UCPD), Legal Counsel, and other administrators) as appropriate to address the needs of students who are having trouble in areas that may include academic, psychological well-being, economic stress, behavioral concerns, family relationships, and social adjustment. This will be done through assessments, consultations, interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. The incumbent fields calls, emails, and referrals regarding distressed students and manages cases involving students of concern. The position is non-counseling and non-therapeutic.
Working in within the Student Affairs Case Management Office and under the supervision of the Director of Student Affairs Case Management, this position exists to coordinate the campus' response to students experiencing varying degrees of distress. Student Affairs Case Management is a unit that provides institutional responses to care for students and the overall Cal community in conjunction with the Students of Concern Committee. This position will serve as a Case Manager with the Students of Concern Committee coordinating with Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Residential Life, Center for Student Conduct, Financial Aid, UC Police Department (UCPD), Legal Counsel and other administrators as appropriate to address the needs of students who are having trouble in areas that may include academics, psychological, economic, discipline, family relationships, social adjustment. This will be done through assessments, consultations, interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. The incumbent fields calls, emails and referrals regarding distressed students; responds to student of concern cases. Additionally this position will work with at risk students responding to Student Conduct and Title IX processes to help with the explanation of procedures while coordinating care services for students involved in cases with potentially severe consequences.
GENERAL CASE MANAGEMENT:
- Provide Case Management and organization for Student of Concern cases
- Serve as a strategist for Case Management with students experiencing distress
- Connect students with the appropriate resources on and off campus serving as a liaison to community resources
- Identify and document the network of campus and community services to meet specific needs related to academic stress, legal issues, mental health services, financial support agencies, food services, etc.
- Serve as a point of contact for campus community members who are seeking consultation and advice about our services for students who seem to be experiencing distress
- Manage inquiries and care reports of students of concern and advise staff and faculty on how to manage complex student issues
- Responsible for gathering initial information, determining behavioral interventions, developing and communicating recommendations
- Investigates each case by applying professional expertise on behavioral and psychological risk factors
- Establish assessment and evaluation procedures for case management
- Exercises impeccable judgment regarding when to inform and consult with the Director of Student Affairs Case Management who serves as the campus expert for high risk student behavioral interventions
- Communicate sensitive and confidential matters regarding complex cases within the guidelines of FERPA
- Supervise and manage the Violence Prevention Coordinator, Student Affairs Fellows, and Bears that Care Program including student staff facilitators, and oversight of campus collaborations with the Violence Prevention Collaborative.
- Oversight of Violence Prevention programs budget
- Responsible for the daily operation of Student Affairs Case Management and the Students of Concern Committee in the absence of the Director of Student Affairs Case Management
- Serves as the subject matter expert for Bears That Care Violence Prevention program
- Serves as the subject matter expert for University Code of Conduct and Title IX
- Serve as the Student Affairs Case Management representative on the Case Management Team overseeing the administration and investigation of Title IX and other harassment/discrimination cases
- Cultivate and influence relationships with key stake-holders such as Center for Student Conduct, Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination and key academic departments
OUTREACH & AWARENESS
- Serve as lead resource using high competency knowledge to understand and assist students in navigating administrative processes such as: Student Conduct and Title IX investigations
- Responsible for understanding the laws, legislation and policy that may affect students and the campus
- Demonstrate skills and ability to work with students in crisis
- Collaboratively assist in navigating logistical challenges of interim suspensions or other restrictions of privileges
- Referrals to legal counsel, including assistance with understanding and complying with protection orders
- Management of regular reporting of metrics and data to University of California Office of the President to ensure compliance with system mandates
- Design, develop and deliver specialized trainings to the campus community regarding students of concern, Student Affairs Case management, and respondent services coordination
- Coordinate with various campus offices to ensure coherent integration and education of campus and community resources for individual students who have challenges with academic, mental and psychological health, conduct, financial and social issues.
CASE MANAGEMENT SKILL SET
LEADERSHIP AND PROGRAM MANAGEMENT SKILL SET:
- Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Advanced skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Strong project management, problem identification, reasoning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to create training curriculum for working with distressed students.
- Knowledge of university and community resources to assist students in meeting mental/physical health, financial, academic and other basic needs.
- Broad knowledge of physical and mental health care and services, crisis management/prevention, educational outreach to students, staff, faculty and parents.
- Knowledge of Student Conduct and Title IX investigation procedures within higher education
- Knowledge of behavioral intervention teams/ crisis management teams
COMMUNICATION SKILL SET
- Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life
- Experience developing innovative ideas to solve problems.
- Direct experience in working with traditional/ non-traditional college aged clients and college campuses.
- Demonstrated knowledge of FERPA and other laws and policies crucial to this work.
- Advanced experience working with students in crisis and creating behavioral intervention plans, and/or case management.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Advanced skill to present and convey information to students, staff, faculty and parents in a way that each group would receive it best.
- Ability to identify problems, use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decisions autonomously.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication, including experience conducting presentations to large and small groups.
- Masters degree from an accredited school in Social Work, Counseling, Student Affairs Higher Education, or related Mental Health fields required. (MSW-Preferred)
- At least 2 years post masters experience.
Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $76,000 - $79,000/annually.
