The Vice President will report to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Student Success who has a strong commitment not only to academic excellence but also to enriching the student life experience. The Vice President for Student Affairs is the chief executive in the Division of Student Affairs. He/she is responsible for the overall management, planning, administration, and evaluation of the Division’s programs, services, personnel, policies, and budget, and for aligning student services to student success goals and initiatives. The Vice President is a member of the President’s Cabinet, President’s Advisory Board, the Academic Affairs and Student Success Leadership Team, and the Provost’s and Deans’ Councils.
The Division of Student Affairs is comprised of four coalitions: Coalition for Student Transitions and Retention, Coalition for Student Health, Wellness and Inclusion; Coalition for Leadership and Engagement and, Coalition for Career Exploration and Professional Development.
Student Transitions and Retention (academic appeals, assessment, judicial conduct, veteran/military affairs, CUNY Edge Program, the Child Care Center); Student Health, Wellness and Inclusion (counseling center, student health center, wellness center, student disability services, athletics, emergency grants, behavioral intervention team);
Leadership and Engagement (CUNY CAP, new student orientation, PEER Educator Program, residential life, Urban Male Leadership Program, Title IX, Student Association); and Career Exploration and Professional Development
The Vice President:
Provides strategic leadership and operational management for all programs and services within the Division of Student Affairs to lead the division to advance and fulfill its mission; to enhance, build and develop a high performing Student Affairs team; to strengthen campus involvement and key relationships; and to enhance the overall quality of the student experience from recruitment to retention and graduation.
Promotes a fully integrated student experience by building partnerships with members of the College and University community to promote the effective and successful planning, coordination and implementation of programs, services and initiatives.
Engages divisional staff in the development and implementation of divisional plans, goals and strategies to enhance student success.
Advances a culture of assessment and impact for the Division of Student Affairs to enable data-informed decision making and to support continuous improvement to meet the evolving needs of students and to achieve College priorities and key performance indicators.
Acts as the principal champion for the welfare and well-being of students and leads the cultivation of a welcoming and inclusive campus community.
Maintains a highly visible presence on campus engaging with student government and other student groups; oversees the planning and execution of student events such as Weeks of Welcome, New Student Orientation, Commencement and a range of other activities throughout the year and represents the College at internal and external functions related to the division.
Collaborates with campus leaders to develop and implement a crisis management plan to address major issues involving or affecting students. Implements University policies and procedures and serves as first responder working closely with the Title IX Coordinator, Public Safety and other campus personnel to facilitate compliance with Title IX.
This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years related experience. A Ph.D or Ed.D in a relevant field and management of multiple student service programs in a large, complex college with organizational characteristics and a student body similar to Lehman College are preferred.
The successful candidate will be a proactive student-centered leader who inspires enthusiasm about our mission, communicates a vision that inspires others, is an action-oriented decision maker driven by a commitment to student success, is accessible and able to connect with faculty, staff, peers and students. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of leadership, management, and resource development in student affairs and/or related services with increasing levels of responsibility, a record of promoting inclusive excellence, a strong student-centered philosophy supported by an understanding of student development, theory and best practices and the ability to make data-driven decisions. Experience working in a unionized environment, strategic planning, budget management and excellent communication skills are required.
