The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Associate Director (AD) of the Institute for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). The mission of the IDEA Institute (idea.illinois.edu) is to support scholarly research, innovation, collaboration, and leadership in these areas at all levels: faculty, staff, students, and K-12 outreach/public engagement. Reporting to the Director of the IDEA Institute, the Associate Director of IDEA will be responsible for executing a college-wide strategy that establishes inclusion, diversity, equity, and access as ubiquitous in everything we do as a college. The AD serves as a subject matter expert who plans, develops, implements, and evaluates programs to meet the evolving needs of the college, its departments, and its people. Additionally, the AD helps on broader impact grant efforts and assists the Director to refine and communicate the Institute's vision, priorities, and activities.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Program Leadership
  • Collaborate with college and departmental leaders and stakeholders to: (a) identify needs and priorities, (b) develop and implement evidence-based strategies, (c) measure progress and effectiveness quantitatively against key metrics, and (d) publish results in journals/conferences. The creation and sustained operation of several IDEA Institute programs is envisioned:
    o Orientation and professional development programs for faculty, staff, and students on topics such as: (a) how to create inclusive and accessible learning environments, (b) how to become actively involved in broadening participation efforts, and (c) developing leadership and/or facilitator skills as it pertains to diversity and inclusion.
    o The Dean's Distinguished Diversity Lectureship series.
    o An annual workshop for recipients of IDEA GIANT (Grassroots Initiatives to Address Needs Together) grants as well as other Illinois faculty, staff, and students to formally showcase their efforts in promoting
    / institutionalizing inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
    o An annual campus level summit that is co-organized by IDEA, OVCDEI, other campus units, and/or local or national/international organizations.
    o Other programs as needed.
  • Partner with AE3 and other campus offices to create evidence-based educational resources and to implement programs that increase knowledge of best practices for units and for individuals at all levels.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with department leads, faculty, and staff within the college, across campus, and with external stakeholders.
  • Assist in implementing recommendations of the Grainger College of Engineering's Diversity Committee and of IDEA Institute task forces (e.g., ARTF).
  • Manage the sub-budget for IDEA Institute programs.


Subject Matter Expert
  • Routinely review the literature, attend conferences and professional development events, and consult with other units at Illinois, at other universities, and in industry to develop a deeper understanding on topics of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access as well as program evaluation and culture/climate in the workplace and in learning environments.
  • Conduct research that analyzes trends, driving factors, barriers, and best practices and educate others / support organizational improvement by providing evidence-based strategies and publishing research results.
  • Perform unit assessments and provide actionable recommendations on college and departmental policies and programs, especially as they pertain to recruiting, retention, mentoring, hiring, and organizational climate and culture.
  • Assist the college and its departments to establish and maintain relevant metrics, survey instruments, and clear lines of ownership and accountability for initiatives.
  • Serve as a regular and active listener to staff, students, faculty, and community members to both gain insight into current concerns and to assess the effectiveness of the College's efforts.
  • Represent the IDEA Institute on relevant departmental, college, university, and/or system level committees and working groups and participate on cross-organizational project teams to design, improve, and implement programs and initiatives.
  • Lead or contribute on IDEA Institute task forces.
  • Review proposals for IDEA-funded projects (e.g., GIANT program) and mentor grantees in developing plans for implementation and sustainability (e.g., navigating the IRB approval process and applying for external grant, philanthropic, or industry funding).


External Project Support
  • Submit proposals as PI or co-PI and assist teams with proposal writing and project implementation for external funding opportunities that are specifically aligned to the mission of the Institute (e.g., NSF ADVANCE, NSF LSAMP, NSF INCLUDES, NSF AGEP, NIMHD, private foundations, and industry).
  • Support faculty in proposing and implementing successful broader impacts / broadening participation activities in both individual PI and larger scale Center-type projects.


Vision and Communications
  • Assist in refining the vision, mission, and scope of activities of the Institute.
  • Collaborate with the college's marketing and communications staff to disseminate Institute news, priorities, and initiatives to stakeholders.
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders including students and their families, staff, faculty, donors and funding agencies, and the public to communicate the Institute's vision and impact.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of reports, presentations, and papers.




Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years of experience working in diversity and inclusion programming.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Engineering, Education, Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience including the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of diversity and inclusion strategies.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Deep knowledge of traditional and modern methods, tools, and techniques for promoting inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
  • Strong leadership, administrative, planning, and presentation skills, including strong project management, public speaking, and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to assess needs and tailor services to address those needs.
  • Strong facilitation skills with a proven ability to facilitate difficult conversations around race, gender, sexual identities, as well as other experiences of injustice, inequity, and oppression.
  • Proven ability to create frameworks around fuzzy or unstructured topics, to enable colleagues and clients to construct practical executable solutions to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access challenges.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Proficiency with Slack, MS Teams, or other collaboration software a plus.
  • Proficiency with Origin Pro, MATLAB, or other programs to plot and analyze data and perform statistical analyses.
  • Ability to interpret qualitative results (e.g., survey or focused interviews) and identify implications.
  • Proficiency with online learning management systems (e.g., Moodle, Compass) and with online meeting systems (e.g., Zoom, Skype).


The Associate Director of the Institute for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis.
